autoevolution's AMG Month

It is officially called Aufecht, Melcher, and Großaspach, but the world knows it better as AMG. It is the Mercedes-Benz division (now grown into a full-blown sub-brand) in charge of all of the German carmaker’s performance cars, and the most important name in Formula 1 in recent years. It is also the focus of autoevolution’s entire army of writers this June when we kick off our special AMG Month coverage.

Born in 1967 in the hands of the former Mercedes-Benz engineers that gave it its name (Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher), AMG is presently one of the most successful companies of its kind, despite the fierce competition in this particular car segment.

The business is so successful that whenever Mercedes builds a new Benz, it does so with AMG in mind, making sure each car meets the needed criteria for the engine and aerodynamic modifications to come. And AMG wastes no time in coming up with its souped-up versions.

How many are there, you ask? Well, AMG presently has in its portfolio 25 models worldwide, starting with the A-Class and ending with the GT 4-Door, available in no fewer than five versions. The pinnacle of the range, the One, is inbound.

With such a large offering of models in dealerships, a history like no other, involvement in racing, and a bright future ahead, AMG is too much of a good subject not to be discussed extensively.
