These days, some nameplates are awkwardly losing all bets against their rivals, while some people think they should get quickly reinvented into something else. On point, the Hyundai Santa Cruz, and Ford Mustang GT, which now travel across the vast expanse of CGI parallel universes.
The four-door compact pickup truck first appeared on our automotive radars through the namesake Santa Cruz concept introduced at the 2015 North American International Auto Show. Then, after many internal debates regarding the allure of a compact unibody truck for American buyers, the production version was revealed in the spring of 2021 for the North American region.
However, by then, it was already a little late – as Ford had ample time to gauge buyers' interest and decide that it needed to intervene and rival Hyundai's offer with a little something of its own. They soon appeared – during the summer of 2021 – with the reinvented Maverick, now an electrified or turbo unibody four-door compact pickup truck instead of a compact car sold in the US during the 1970s.
And the rest is history because the Mexico-built Blue Oval quickly snatched the sales crown from its America-made adversary. So, what if the South Korean company decided to share some of the cost burdens with Ford's great rival General Motors and badge-engineer a Buick GST model based on the Santa Cruz?
Well, the crazy idea comes from Jim, the virtual artist known as jlord8 on social media, who painted the face of a Buick on top of the Hyundai Santa Cruz body and sealed a CGI partnership that no one expected. Anyway, if that mashup doesn't tickle your digital senses, how about a mid-engine Ford GT Mustang to combat the success of the C8 Chevrolet Corvette?
London, UK-based virtual artist Al Yasid, better known as al.yasid on social media, is again making purists run amok, crying their Blue Oval badges at the sight of the virtual combination between mid-engine Ford GT prowess and S650 Ford Mustang GT muscle. As anyone can see, the result is quite controversial, outrageous, or stunning – depending on who you ask among the artist's fans and your POV. But, of course, it does have a point.
Now the Ford GT is gone and will probably never come back – and instead, the C8 Corvette rules undefeated as 'America's sports car' with a mid-engine soul in Stingray, Z06, and E-Ray guises. So, what if the Blue Oval company also considered mitigating its success with a special version of the Coyote V8-powered Ford GT Mustang?
Well, all we have seen here is merely wishful thinking. But we can always select our favorites – and we must say that both mashup ideas look pretty enticing. Alas, in the end, there can be only one – and our vote ultimately goes toward the mid-engine Mustang. What about you?
