BMW may be one of the most outrageous automakers out there right now, but we all know that 'bad publicity' is still publicity. Besides, they tend to mitigate all the craziness with more stuff that feels like stark staring bonkers to everyone else – but in a good way.
If you ask diehard fans, there are countless examples of contemporary BMW models that don't belong in the family – the Minecraft-like M2 when it is adorned with M Performance Parts, any 7 Series or i7 with a two-tone appearance, or the 738-hp XM Label Red that feels like Porky Pig's ultimate ride. And these are just a few examples of the 'Inglorious Basterds' variety.
Anyway, other folks have managed to get over the initial shocks and today have a more relaxed opinion on matters of the heart and soul – such as the fact that 4 Series, M3, or M4 models don't look horrendous… once you get to see them in person. And that surely made BMW a little more confident in supporting its bold yet trendy styling ethos – to the tune of adding much-requested models into the double-coffined kidney grille family like the first-ever M3 Touring (G81).
Speaking of feisty station wagons, if the Bavarians brought to life a model they had never done before, it is only logical to assume they would also reintroduce a bigger sibling. So, the eighth generation 5 Series executive sedan (G60) has recently arrived to mitigate the clear and present danger of the W214 Mercedes-Benz E-Class – both in ICE-powered and EV form. Soon enough, we will also see the G61 station wagon version, including in zero-emissions guise.
But the Touring will not only cater to the novel EV lifestyle. Instead, back in late June, BMW also confirmed that a third wagon-style M5 Touring is happening yet again after the E34 and E61 versions. It's due sometime in 2024 with the codename G99 and many promises under the hood to put the magnificent Audi RS 6 Avant Performance in a shaded corner. And those all have to do with the V8 muscle aided by plug-in hybrid technology to the tune of some 750 horsepower, according to the rumor mill.
Of course, it will also be larger and heavier than ever, so don't just take the higher power and jump to cloud-nine conclusions with it. However, it's probably going to be a hoot, anyway. And, naturally, that has also attracted the good grace of the imaginative realm of digital car content creators.
The virtual artist, better known as hycade on social media, can easily be seen as a massive contemporary sports car fan, so M5 ideation is probably spot-on for his reel. But the Touring version? Not so much, especially considering this pixel master loves to dabble with models from then and now that are already present on the market – not upcoming. Perhaps the idea of a feisty BMW M5 Touring with 750 hp on tap was too much to resist; who knows?
The reality – the digital one, that is – now speaks of the CGI expert using his skills to imagine the potential looks of the G99 BMW M5 Touring in all its virtual glory. Albeit, there is a massive catch. As always, the author could not resist adding his signature touches to the concept car, so this high-performance Bavarian station wagon isn't stock, either. Instead, we are considering a gloriously slammed and widebody aero kit modification!
