BMW’s fans were waiting for the facelift of the G82 4 Series, and the German automaker unveiled it in late January 2024, boasting some technological upgrades and a few improvements in aesthetic details.

Only some purists were outraged when the 4 Series replaced the 3 Series coupe since that nameplate had a huge fanbase. Still, things went smoothly after the first shock, and the U.S. market became the most important one for the German automaker, followed by the one from Germany and China. BMW played it safe with the LCI (Life Cycle Impulse) version of the 4 Series and didn’t want to shock anyone with a new, bolder design approach. Still, the car benefited from the latest technology packages developed by the automaker.

One of the most polarizing parts of the 4 Series was at the front, which featured tall kidney grilles. Unlike the non-facelifted version, the 2024 model came with horizontal slats that somehow sweetened the car’s image. In addition, the new headlights, even though they kept the same shape as before, came with standard LED internals. As an option, customers could have them with laser technology that greatly improved nighttime driving. Lower, on the apron, the automaker installed a set of vents next to the grille, while on the sides, it placed scoops that channeled air to the front brakes and around the bodywork.

From its profile, the 2024 4 Series boasted standard 19-inch alloy wheels. The car’s overall shape didn’t change, featuring the same enlarged wheel fenders on both axles. Customers could get the vehicle with body-colored door mirrors or black, depending on the version and options. Furthermore, there were no chromed trims around the window line. Finally, at the back, the automaker installed standard LED taillights with an option for a set of ones fitted with a “Laserlight” system, which consisted of optic fiber elements that gave a 3D aspect. These were fitted as standard on the 440i and were part of the Shadowline package.

Inside, the 2024 4 Series coupe came with new materials and a brand new infotainment system that ran on BMW’s iDrive OS 8.5. Atop the dashboard, the automaker installed a curved piece of glass that covered the instrument panel and a touchscreen. Fronting the driver was a sport steering wheel with standard paddle shifters across the range, with an option for a flat-bottom one. Since BMW made the 4 Series a sports car, it installed high-bolstered sports seats that could hold their occupants in place during high-speed cornering maneuvers.

Under the hood, the 4 Series inherited the engines from its predecessor. It was available with a choice of two or three-liter powerplants, with four and six-cylinders, respectively. In addition to gasoline units, BMW also provided the car with turbo-diesel variants. But the most significant upgrade was the 48-volt system, which came with an integrated starter generator that gave the car an instant boost of 11 PS (10 hp) when accelerating. Depending on the model and variant, the 2024 4 Series was available with either rear- or all-wheel drive systems.
