We thought the hype was over. There were Tesla Cybertrucks that failed to sell even though their prices were not much higher than their MRSP. But Tesla announced the model is sold out for 2024 and the frenzy is back. One has just sold for $262,500, and it is the first of its kind: a Tesla Cybertruck Cyberbeast Foundation Series.
That is more than double its MRSP. The used car market is a car flippers’ paradise. A Cybertruck Foundation Series, listed on Cox Automotive's website, sold for $244,000. The buyer was a Porsche dealership from South Orlando, Florida.

The dealer placed the winning bid on February 28, and that was it. They got themselves an electric pickup truck that cost $120,000 in its Cyberbeast Foundation Series version for double the price. The model could have been one of the ten delivered on November 30 during the handover event that took place at Giga Texas.

But the dealership in Florida purchased the Cybertruck only to reflip it and, a couple of weeks later, it was listed for even more: $269,000.

In fact, the most expensive Tesla Cybertruck ever sold was the one auctioned off for a jaw-dropping $400,000 last October at the Petersen Automotive Museum during the Petersen Gala. But that was not car flipping but money raised for a good cause: raising money to support the automotive museum in Los Angeles.

Tesla restricts resale of the Cybertruck during the first year of ownership

Furthermore, the offerings started pouring in on the used car market, with Tesla Cybertrucks piling up on websites as their owners are trying to make a profit out of the sale. However, selling the vehicle during the first year of ownership is forbidden by Tesla, according to the purchase contract that all customers sign.

The contract includes a precautionary clause that requires owners to proceed to a buyback in case they no longer want their Cybertruck. Tesla is willing to purchase the vehicle "at the purchase price listed on your Final Price Sheet less $0.25/mile driven."

Otherwise, those who sell the vehicle to other persons will have to pay a financial penalty of $50,000 or the profit coming out of the sale, whichever is greater. With this Tesla selling for $262,500, that's a lot of profit to give to Tesla: $142,500 the least.

Tesla went as far as blacklisting a customer who listed his Cybertruck “literally everywhere.” He received an email from the automaker, which informed him that all his orders had been canceled without the refund of the $100 reservation and $250 order fee, and he would never be able to buy a Tesla again.

Was it really cleared by Tesla?

One of the owners, however, listed his Cybertruck for sale and claimed he had Tesla's consent for the transaction, which meant he did not have to pay anything to the carmaker once he sold the vehicle.

Despite the fact that those taking a look at the listing kept asking him to show proof of Tesla's approval for sale, he failed to show it. The final bid hit $150,000, and the owner refused to sell.

That could have been interpreted as a hint that the hype was starting to melt. But Tesla announced that the Cybertruck was sold out for the entire 2024, and customers won't be getting the models they ordered before 2025, which caused an instant reaction, and the frenzy is back.

A Cybertruck has just sold for $262,000 during the Sotheby's Motorsport online auctions. It had only 50 miles on the clock and a three-motor setup that delivers 845 horsepower. The 123-kWh battery pack stores enough energy for a drive of up to 320 miles before the vehicle needs to be plugged in again. The run from 0 to 60 mph (0 to 97 kph) takes 2.6 seconds.

The equipment list includes an 18.5-inch display at the front and a 9.4-inch display at the rear, dual subwoofers, 15 speakers, and an Armor Glass greenhouse. The photos of the interior show the upper section of the dashbord is covered in black Alcantara.

The vehicle rides on 12-inch wheels with a black finish, wrapped in Goodyear Wrangler Territory RT tires. The new owner is also getting two key cards and a universal wall connector.

The Cyberbeast version can tow up to 11,000 pounds (4,990 kilograms), an ability that it partially demonstrated during the advertising tour across America, which put the world's best-selling car, the Tesla Model Y, in a glass box on a trailer towed by the Cybertruck. The latest stops along the route were at major sightseeing spots in New York City.

This time, the bidding for the first Cyberbeast to cross the auction block kicked off at $75,000 and skyrocketed, reaching more than double the price of a range-topping Cybertruck. Sotheby's Motorsport claims that it is a record price for the Cybertruck, except for the EV selling for $400,000 in October 2023.
