You don't have to choose between aesthetics or functionality when building camper vans – you can have them both, provided you use some creativity. Take the project I'm checking out today as an example.
Meet Joe and Lindsay, the couple who brought this tiny home on wheels to life. What we have here is a Ram ProMaster 3500 with an extended body – as you might soon tell from how this mobile home looks, this isn't their first camper van project.

Their first conversion was based on a Ford Transit Connect. They used all the experience they gained from that build to make this one. By the way, if you're interested in finding a reliable van to convert, check out a recent article I wrote about this exact topic.

There's not much to say regarding the rig's exterior. It's finished in black paint with no elements hinting toward its camper DNA. That makes it ideal for stealth camping while also serving as a safer mobile home since ill-intended people won't be tempted as much to break in.

Slide the main door open, and you'll be greeted by a tastefully designed interior – it boasts a beautiful color palette of black, white, and light grey. Joe and Lindsay opted for an open layout, meaning the driver's cabin isn't separated from the living space. What's more, both the driver and passenger seats can be swiveled to face the interior.

You'll discover the seating area dead ahead of the entrance. It consists of a decently-sized couch with storage space underneath. The rig's diesel heater is also located underneath. Other notable details in this space are a side-screen window on the wall behind the couch, two spacious overhead cabinets, and a cubby storage spot.

Next, we have the kitchen, located on the passenger side of the interior. It features a sizeable white quartz countertop, a flip-up countertop extension, a deep sink, a two-burner induction stove, a fridge/freezer, a tiny shelf, and two small overhead cabinets. Moreover, a hexagonal tile backsplash is a nice design touch.

For storage, you can use the two cabinets, as well as drawers underneath the countertop. By the way, all the cabinetry inside this rig was custom-built. Moreover, one small drawers under the sink houses a water heater switch, a remote for the diesel heater, a Maxxair fan remote, and an inverter controller.

Opposite the kitchen, you'll find this camper van's centerpiece: the bathroom. Its entrance is a beautiful archway, just like the entrance to the bedroom does. Moreover, they installed a rainhead shower, but can also use a standard handheld showerhead if needed.

Regarding design, it's finished with cedar all around - the walls and ceiling are treated to prevent rotting or water damage. However, the shower mat, which is also made from cedar, was left untreated to produce a nice smell. Cedarwood has a fresh, woody scent with hints of citrus.

The bathroom also houses the toilet. The couple stores in a compartment hidden behind a waterproof door. This way, they can keep nasty smells away and have more space to shower.

By the way, water inside this mobile home is provided by a 25-gallon (95-liter) freshwater tank connected to a 4-gallon (15-liter) heater. I bet showering in this beautiful space makes you feel like you're in a spa. It's too bad that they can't really enjoy a long, hot shower because of the relatively small tank. One costly yet very effective solution would be installing a recirculating shower system.

And finally, we have the bedroom. Underneath it, you'll notice two small drawers – of course, both are used for storage. However, the bottom shelf is mounted on slide-outs that support 220 lb. (100 kg) and comes with a small platform that allows you to use it as a step to get into bed.

The bedroom has a full-size mattress designed to accommodate you from side to side. Other notable features here are two large overhead cabinets, a Maxxair fan, and a long nook between the bed and the rear doors with two charging points.

Some distinctive aesthetic touches are two triangle-shaped cubbies that serve as tiny nightstands (check out the photos to see what I'm referring to) and ship ropes on the edges of one part of the bedroom.

To access the garage underneath the bed, you'll have to exit the van and open the two rear doors. It's closed off via four doors and holds the water heater and the freshwater tank.

The middle part of the garage can be used for storage, while the right side is occupied by the electrical system. Its highlights are an inverter/charger, a DC-DC charger, two 200 Ah batteries, and a solar charge controller connected to 600 W solar panels on the roof.

All in all, Joe and Lindsay found an ideal balance between aesthetics and practicality. I love the cedar bathroom, and the rest of the living space has plenty of useful features.
