The Civic had a meteoric rise to the top soon after its introduction almost coincided with the Oil Crisis of the 1970s, thus establishing Honda as a maker of fuel-efficient, reliable, and sometimes sporty cars that don’t have outrageous price tags.
Now in its tenth generation, the model is still a force to be reckoned with in the compact segment, managing to become the best-selling passenger car on Honda’s largest market, the United States.

That said, the Civic’s current generation has also suffered from a busy love-it-or-hate-it exterior design that may have alienated some of its traditional customers in the quest to drop the median age of its drivers significantly

This is probably why Honda will try a different take for the 11th generation of the model, which promises to be a game-changer in the compact hatchback segment once it goes official at the end of this year.

Not only that but since the U.S. is already its largest market, the 2022 Honda Civic hatch will also be manufactured in America for the first time ever, at the carmaker’s Greensburg, Indiana plant, alongside its sedan version.

We already got a preview of how the model will look thanks to a near-production concept car that was revealed on Twitch last year.

Still, the world got a chance to check out the car’s final design even before the concept since patent images of the 2022 Civic were leaked way earlier.

The main design language is vastly different when compared to the current generation, with a much lower beltline making way for increased window area all around the car, while the rear's notchback design is even more reminiscent of a 1980s Accord.

After a testing prototype of the hatch was spotted earlier this year in Germany, it is now time to check out a more revealing one in the United States, where it appears to show more of its production taillights.

Based on an updated version of the 10th generation global architecture, the new Civic will debut much improved active safety technology features and a completely redesigned interior, built around a 9-inch full-HD touchscreen display featuring a free-floating design for the first time in a Honda.

Those longing for an even more hardcore Civic Type R will need to be more patient since development on the new model might have suffered a few hiccups because of the international health crisis.
