Launched right before the Oil Crisis of the 1970s, the Civic is not only Honda’s oldest surviving nameplate but also one of the cars that put the Japanese carmaker on the world map.
An instant success right from the start, the Honda Civic has continuously evolved over its ten generations, with the latest models being flagbearers of fuel economy, reliability, and driving dynamics at a reasonable price.

Its current generation is the most popular passenger car in North America, which has become the model’s largest market over the years.

That’s all nice and dandy, but Honda wants to take it up a notch with the 11th generation of the compact model, which was previewed by a near-production concept car on Twitch, of all places, as Honda’s way of keeping up with its millennial customers.

In fact, the 2022 Honda Civic hatchback will also be manufactured in the U.S. for the first time, at Honda’s Greensburg, Indiana plant.

A pre-preproduction prototype of the not-so-compact-anymore hatch was recently spotted on the roads of Germany, and despite the heavy camouflage, you can see that it will follow the same lines of the concept car.

You don’t have to take our word for it, though, as patent images of the model have already been leaked last year in the fall.

Likely based on the same global compact platform underpinning the current generation, the new Civic will try to up the ante when it comes to active safety technology and the way its passengers interact with the completely redesigned interior.

The interior will receive an all-new digital instrument cluster for the driver, alongside a nine-inch full-HD touchscreen display sitting atop the center console.

Type R fans will be glad to know that the new one will be at least as quick as the segment-leading current model, with some rumors even suggesting that the 2023 Civic Type R may get AWD thanks to one axle being powered by an electric motor.
