We Don't See Any Reason Why You'd Buy This Showy G 63 4x4² - Unless You're a Lil Rapper

There are many things wrong with the car world today. First and foremost, it's going down the electric path. And second, no body style truly matters anymore unless it's a crossover, SUV, or pickup.
Most of the time, some of the priciest rides tend to be visited by the tuning fairy, which often leaves them a crazy body kit under the pillow and, if there is enough room, a set of large wheels and additional flashy upgrades. This seems to be the recipe for almost everything Mansory touches these days, and just for kicks, it's not the only tuner that tends to go OTT, as you also have DarwinPro Aero, Keyvany, and others that need mentioning.

This is the only reference we will make in this story to the latter two, as it is Mansory that gets the laughs here. The reason is one exaggerated Mercedes-AMG G 63 4x4². You see, the stock one is already on the flashy side with its widened fenders, big wheels, additional lights, and other modifications meant to improve its off-roading credentials.

However, as we all know, most G-Wagen owners tend to use theirs as mall crawlers, so despite being one potent beast once the comfort of the asphalt ends, it won't put its money where its mouth is that often. Don't think that this is where the three-pointed star's engineers drew the line, as they also improved the suspension.

The G 63 4x4² has portal axles, a cool 45-degree approach angle, a 13.8-inch (351 mm) increased ground clearance, and a wading depth of 35.8 inches (910 mm). And as cool as that may sound on paper, these numbers are not better than the old G 550 4x4². Still, it’s likely that no owner notices that, as they won't risk damaging that expensive paint just to take it on an adventure through the great outdoors.

Now, one could expect various tuners to improve this model's off-road prowess further. But Mansory doesn't function like that. In fact, they brought out the flashy side within the example pictured above. Christened the Gronos P850, it has a Portland Gray finish on the outside and numerous add-ons that are simply ridiculous, like the backlit grille, additional lights, and roof-mounted spoiler. Taken separately, the wheels are not bad at all, though they don't look at home on the G 63 4x4².

If you paid attention to the opening image, then you know that the controversial tuner didn't draw the line here. Quite the opposite, as the cockpit is even flashier. It has enhanced ambient lighting as if the standard one wasn't already brash enough, a starlight headliner sending Rolls-Royce vibes, and a curious nautical theme achieved by mixing white and black leather and various other accents. As usual, Mansory's logo can be found on a whole bunch of parts, and we cannot wrap it up without mentioning the individual captain's chairs at the rear, separated by a long console.

Usually, the Mercedes-AMG G 63 4x4² enjoys 577 hp (585 ps/430 kW) from its bi-turbo 4.0-liter V8. The engine is in the same configuration as the one powering the regular G 63, and since the 4x4² is significantly heavier, the Affalterbach brand decided not to release the acceleration and top speed. As for this one that bears Mansory's name all over it, it has 838 hp (850 ps/625 kW) to play with. We wrote about a Brabus-tuned copy a few months back, and that one needed 4.6 seconds to 62 mph (100 kph) aided by its 789 hp (800 ps/588 kW), so this one probably does it in roughly 4.5 seconds.

As if it matters to anyone rich enough to afford a Mansory Gronos P850, it returns 11.7 mpg-US (20.1 l/100 km) combined and emits 456 g/km of CO2. This is a brand new vehicle, according to the listing on Hollmann International that commands an arm, a leg, a kidney, and your firstborn child. Hey, you didn't really expect it to be a bargain supertruck, did you? The listing, which you can access here, reveals an asking price of 696,150. It equals almost $735,000 at today's exchange rates, or almost four new Mercedes-AMG G 63 SUVs in the United States.

If we had that much money lying around, we'd certainly opt for a stock G 63 with only the delivery miles under its belt, packed with multiple factory options and sprinkled with a matte look. We'd likely quench our speed thirst by getting a real supercar, and by us, that would be an I, and I'm certain most of you would do the same. But we wouldn't judge you (too much) if you decided to get this ultra flashy G 63 4x4² either. After all, we only live once, and if it makes you happy, then by all means, go ahead and buy it.
