The French automaker recently took the wraps off its Master commercial vehicle at the Solutrans Motor Show but is now prepared to go back to the usual passenger car business with the upcoming Renault 5 EV rebirth.
The forthcoming subcompact electric car, with styling based on the beloved Renault 5 original, was presented in prototype form during early 2021. As taught by Tesla, patience is a virtue, and we are almost into 2024 and the series-production version is still nowhere to be seen, although it's probably around 90% the same as the concept car.
Well, it's nowhere to be seen in its entirety, at least not in the real world. That is because Renault lifted "another corner of the veil" not long ago as the Renault 5 E-Tech electric hatchback prepares to arrive at the 2024 Geneva International Motor Show. The latter is officially returning to Geneva next year to celebrate its 100th anniversary between February 26 and March 3. Right now, though, Renault is preoccupied with a few teasers regarding the 5 E-Tech and is also sharing some juicy EV specifications.
According to the automaker, the Renault 5 E-Tech will have two battery options – including one with up to 52 kWh and a range of 400 km based on the WLTP cycle. For now, the first pictures reveal some of the design details – the 'human-like' headlights, a humongous charge indicator light placed squarely on top of the hood, the wheel arches, plus the vertical rear lights.
Interestingly, Renault has its own version of the pre-ordering process – it's called R5 R Pass, and if customers pay €150 in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, Belgium, and the Netherlands, they will get to order the new EV ten days before the general public. Anyway, if you want to skip the line potentially – even if only virtually – the imaginative realm of digital car content creators is always happy to oblige.
For example, the virtual artist behind Larson Design (aka lars_o_saeltzer on social media) brings his CGI vision of the series-production Renault 5 and A290 EVs to life. First, the unofficial vision of the EV that echoes the iconic R5 is probably spot on with the design changes implemented for the series production vehicle. Secondly, the pixel master drops the EV hot hatchback bomb, too, as he also imagined the Alpine A290 flagship based on the Renault 5 E-Tech but will try to give Tesla's Performance models a run for their EV money.
So, what do you think – is this hypothetical design project of the Renault 5 E-Tech and Alpine A290 on point, or are the French automakers holding back a few surprises for the official introduction? Also, which one is your favorite, the regular 5 E-Tech of the A290 pocket-sized EV bomb?
