The year is drawing near its end, but Toyota enthusiasts are still hyped about potential new introductions. And after a tidal wave of reveals across 2023, who could blame them?
The Japanese automaker has boasted lots and lots of all-new, first-ever, or refreshed models – plus a bucket load of special editions. This month, they opened the ball with the 2025 Camry mid-size sedan and 2025 Crown Signia crossover SUV at the 2023 Los Angeles Auto Show. Then, they moved to Europe to unveil the Yaris Cross facelift with a new Hybrid 130 powertrain, and in Thailand, the IMV 0 concept of a modular truck morphed into the dirt-cheap ($13k) Hilux Champ. Last but not least, at home in Japan, they reintroduced the Land Cruiser Series 70 with a design worthy of the 1980s and modern features contemporary with the 2020s.
You would think that's enough to end the year on a high note, right? Well, the rumor mill believes that Toyota has at least one or two novelties left in the goodie bag – the next-gen 4Runner or the reported Land Cruiser FJ, perhaps? On the other hand, the imaginative realm of digital car content creators also came up with a third option – the compact 'Land Hopper' as a rival to the likes of Ford's Bronco Sport.
Toyota fans might remember this nameplate was used for a mobility concept at the inaugural edition of the Japan Mobility Show (better known as the Tokyo Motor Show for almost seven decades before its reinvention). However, some outlets still believe it could be a ruse by the Japanese automaker to hide its true intentions. For example, the good folks from the AutomagzPro channel on YouTube have some AI-assisted CGI thoughts about a hypothetical hybrid compact Toyota SUV.
As such, it seems they join the pack of Toyota 'Land Hopper' supporters with a new vision from their resident pixel master. It's not the first time we have seen them portray this unofficial body-on-frame TNGA-F compact rugged SUV as the smallest Land Cruiser family member and a worthy FJ Cruiser heir. But now it's also with a hypothetical electrified powertrain under the hood.
As for the charming old-and-new-school looks, this compact 4-door Toyota SUV sure looks like a worthy successor to the FJ Cruiser. However, do remember that all these renderings should be taken with a grain of salt as nothing is official from the Japanese automaker just yet. Alas, suppose a compact SUV slotted below the all-new 2024 Land Cruiser comes to life. In that case, it should clearly be a hybrid – albeit the powertrain would obviously arrive courtesy of the 2023 Corolla Cross Hybrid rather than the Tacoma and Land Cruiser's i-Force Max series.
