The Acura TLX Type S is the type of sports sedan that generates mixed feelings, especially this PMC Edition specification. These are all built at the carmaker’s Performance Manufacturing Center alongside the NSX, setting you back a little over $60,000 retail.
Now, you might think that sounds pretty good, right? I mean, $60k for a turbocharged Japanese sports sedan with 355 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque? Not bad, especially when you also factor in the 10-speed automatic gearbox and Acura’s Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system, which allow you to accelerate from zero to 60 mph in roughly 5 seconds flat – maybe even quicker, according to some people.

I’ll admit, it’s a cool-looking car, and before we get into why it may or may not be a smart purchase, let’s explore this particular 2023 TLX Type S PMC Edition model, up for grabs to the highest bidder with 13,200 miles on the clock and wearing Curva Red.

The seller kept it mostly stock, adding only tinted windows to its wide range of features. When new, this retailed for $63,995 (destination and handling included), and the warranty is still valid.

Since this is a PMC Edition car, it means it comes with that previously mentioned NSX paint, exclusive 20-inch light weight alloy wheels, exclusive PMC styling accents (both inside and out), and a heated sport steering wheel.

Speaking of what’s inside, highlights include the Driver Recognition Memory System, heated front seats, multi-view rear camera, AcuraLink, SiriusXM satellite radio, CarPlay and Android Auto integration, WiFi hotspot, dual-zone automatic climate control, push-button ignition, push-button shifter and plenty more.

Meanwhile, the Type S package adds a 3D Premium Audio System with 17 speakers, sat-nav with voice recognition, wireless phone charging, leather-trimmed sport seats with UltraSuede inserts, Blind Spot Information, Rear Cross Traffic Monitor, Adaptive Cruise Control, Collision Mitigation Braking, Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Lake Keeping Assist, Road Departure Mitigation, and Traffic Jam Assist, among others.

This car is literally loaded with all types of goodies, and with only one day left in the auction, the highest bid sits at $37,500. If it ends up selling for under $40,000, you can consider this a steal. Otherwise, well, we might have a problem.

Actually, the problem isn’t with the TLX Type S PMC Edition as a used car, but rather when it’s brand-new.

You have to consider what else you can get for $64,000, and just because they slap an exclusive color on it and say it’s one of 100, doesn’t change the following facts: You can buy a brand-new 2024 Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing from $61,495, and the latter’s twin-turbocharged 3.6-liter V6 engine is good for 472 horsepower and 445 lb-ft of torque.

It might not be particularly quicker than the TLX Type S to 60 mph, but it’ll definitely put the Acura in its place the more you keep accelerating, and this is only fact no.1.

Here’s no.2: The 2024 BMW M340i xDrive sedan costs upwards of $59,600, and it’ll get you to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds. It also serves up a more complete package compared to the Acura, so it would be tough to justify purchasing the latter.
