Around nine years ago, when Tesla was preparing to introduce the production-ready Model X, Land Rover secretly discussed making an all-electric Range Rover. Rumors from back then hinted at an Evoque-like model with a battery pack under the floor. But today, it looks like total electrification is finally happening, and it's the big daddy that's getting this treatment, not the baby brother.
Six years after Ford reached a deal with India's Tata Motors to let go of Jaguar and Land Rover in exchange for $2.3 billion ($3.2 billion in today's money), rumors about the British brand following in Tesla's footsteps were floating everywhere. An unnamed company official said back then that talks about the project were serious, and they might end up doing it. But Tesla didn't have the reputation (or the value) it has today, and many industry execs still considered total electrification reserved for the post-2030 era.

But here we are, nearly nine years after that rumor. Tesla is the world's most valuable automaker, an all-electric vehicle (the Model Y) is the best-selling car globally, and Land Rover USA is inviting interested parties to sign up and be among the first people in the country who can pre-order the Range Rover EV. The official name is unknown right now, but what's certain is that the posh SUV won't come with tailpipes.

Applying a practice seen often in the world of video games and at other automakers like GMC, Land Rover is making sure that prospective customers maintain an interest in this vehicle. This sign-up process also sets up a database of possible buyers that could cover the entire first year of production. Of course, this can only happen once putting down a deposit becomes possible. Thus, the all-electric SUV may end up having a very successful launch.

The automaker says US customers will be able to pre-order the Range Rover EV starting later this year but does not specify precisely when. We will keep you informed about the ordering process. But if you wish to be let know by the brand directly and maybe receive an invitation to a secret preview, all you have to do is sign up and choose the preferred contact method.

Two signs prefaced this move as being imminent. One, the 2024 Range Rover plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) P440e and P510e got upgraded and turned into the P460e and P550e. They now have a more potent electric motor, while the battery capacity remains unchanged. Thus, the maximum all-electric range remains 51 miles. Even though only the P550e is available in the US, this move shows that the Brits are ready to electrify their crown jewel and have the necessary know-how to improve the PHEVs constantly.

From here, ditching the internal combustion engine altogether is just another step in the right direction. And it's about to be completed soon enough! Of course, an appropiate price tag will join it. The base MSRP for a Range Rover is $107,400 at the time of writing. The EV will most likely cost a bit more and may climb over the $250,000 mark when fully specced, considering that the SV LWB trim's cost currently starts from $234,000.

Two, the interior changes introduced for the 2024 model year transformed the cabin. Most physical buttons and knobs disappeared, the screens got enlarged, and the operating software upgraded to make the curved screen the home of nearly everything the driver might want to adjust about the SUV.

Some could also argue that the April announcement regarding a $19 billion investment in developing all-electric versions of the Jaguar Land Rover (now known as simply JLR after the recent rebranding) models was another sign that indicated the imminent launch of zero-tailpipe emission units.

Finally, as Aston Martin tied the know with Lucid for its upcoming EVs, we expect Land Rover to dig deep within Tata Motors and find the best resources available for its Range Rover EV. It'll be one monumental shift, that's for sure!
