Genesis is looking to expand its crossover family with a brand-new product. Well, in theory, it is brand-new; in practice, however, it builds on the normal GV80. Presumably called the GV80 Coupe, it was previewed by a concept earlier this year, and more recently, it was scooped in the open in prototype form.
You know how most of the time, the concept has almost nothing in common with the production variant from a design perspective? Well, not the Genesis GV80 Coupe because it looks almost identical to the show car. Sure, there is some thick camo hiding the design, but we can make out the styling, and it's obvious that it will be very similar.
Up front, we can see the crest grille with the split lighting signature on each side. The side vents are about the same, and so is the central intake in the front bumper. The roofline is arched towards the rear, eating up the headroom for rear seat passengers and the cargo area compared to the normal GV80, and out back, it appears to feature a pair of dual full-width taillights. The diffuser is a bit more mature this time and has cutouts for quad exhaust tips.
Compared to the study, the production model has a higher ground clearance and four instead of two tailpipes. Chances are it won't feature seating for four, as it will likely get a rear bench that can accommodate three passengers. Nonetheless, we at least hope the pair of rear individual seats will at least be offered as an option. And don't dare hope for a three-row version, as there is simply no room for that. The interior will likely be shared with the GV80, and don't hold your breath for a roll cage, like on the scooped prototype, as it won't make it to the showroom models.
The 2024 Genesis GV80 is offered with two powertrains stateside, a 2.5-liter four-pot, and a 3.5-liter V6, both with forced induction. Nonetheless, it is possible that the coupe variant might skip the former when it launches, maybe getting the latter, which produces 375 horsepower, working in concert with an eight-speed auto 'box. The four-banger develops 300 hp and might make its way to the GV80 Coupe later. Europe also gets a 3.0-liter inline-six diesel, rated at 268 hp, and we wouldn't act surprised if they sold the coupe with this low-revving mill in the Old Continent.
But when is it due? Hyundai's premium marque has yet to announce the unveiling date, but we think it should premiere before the end of the year or in 2024, with the crossover arriving in the United States as a 2024 model to take on the likes of the Mercedes GLE Coupe, BMW X6, Audi Q8, and Porsche Cayenne Coupe.
