Count on Tecnomar to shake things up – not just a bit, but a whole lot. The yard that built its reputation on the construction of the most beautiful, most luxurious speed demons is now switching it up with the This Is It catamaran.
Catamarans are twin-hull vessels that outdo their single-hull counterparts when it comes to stability, speed, and interior volume over the same length and height. They might not look like it from afar, but they're better than yachts or superyachts, which is why they're also priced higher than those.
A catamaran is usually boxier and less elegant than a superyacht because it sits closer to the water and is much wider than a single-hull. So here's Tecnomar, determined to change this perception of the traditional cat with a custom build that seems straight from the future.
The yard, which is part of The Italian Sea Group (TISG), is in the business of speed, whether we’re talking about smaller boats or larger vessels, inspired by supercars and designed to deliver speed, luxury, and safety in a single package. This Is It is what happens when Tecnomar brings their unique approach to the rather unsurprising, bland exterior of a catamaran: a "groundbreaking project that sets a new benchmark in yacht design."
This Is It is the name of the new C-130 cat, introduced to the public the other day via press release and renders, and set to make its public debut in the flesh (and metal and lots and lots of glazing) at this month's 2023 edition of the Monaco Yacht Show. This Is It wants to represent the future of yachting with its sleek lines and futuristic design, increased efficiency and a reduced carbon footprint, and incredible amenities.
Measuring 43.5 meters (143 feet) in total length and 14.5 meters (47.5 feet) in width, This Is It offers an interior volume of approximately 750 GT, which allows accommodation for 12 guests across six cabins, and fancy features that wouldn't look amiss on a much larger superyacht. These range from a large show kitchen to a massage room, a pool on the aft deck, large balconies, and a surprise garden that spreads across two levels and gives this cat the vibe of a floating deluxe villa.
This secret-but-not-really lush garden is located on the private deck attached to the owner's suite, which means access to it could be restricted, should the owner desire it. After all, there are some things on your yacht you want to keep to yourself, and no one's judging.
The interior has been shown in renders only as of this writing, but that will change when the cat goes on display at the Monaco Yacht Show. Tecnomar says finishes are all premium, as befits a Tecnomar build. They include combinations of leather and Alcantara, oak and teak, gold, bronze, titanium, and carbon, and marble and hardwood for contrast.
The overall styling is elegant and modern, evoking dynamism and timeless refinement. Interior spaces are also relaxing and zen due to a combination of neutrals and expansive glazing, including oversize skylights that allow plenty of natural light in.
"The realization of this extraordinary project challenges the 'conventional' perceptions, driving us to completely recreate the boundaries of aesthetic parameters," says Giovanni Costantino, Founder and CEO of The Italian Sea Group. "This Is It is born as the perfect blend between the desires of a forward-thinking owner and a brand like Tecnomar, capable of taking on such an ambitious and demanding challenge."
This isn't just PR talk, either. The cat looks incredible both inside and out. The exterior is asymmetric and unexpectedly curvaceous, with lines inspired by fantastic sea creatures and serving the practical purpose of enhanced aerodynamics.
It also features a surprising amount of glazing – about 600 square meters (6,458 square feet) in total, which is an achievement if you consider that the design also aimed for overall weight reduction. Tecnomar doesn't say whether that's the case, but the focus on aerodynamics and weight reduction hints at a desire to deliver the kind of speed the yard became famous for.
This Is It is IMO Tier III compliant thanks to innovative exhaust gas treatment technology (SCR or Selective Catalytic Reduction) that leads to a reduction of NOx emissions. No word on propulsion just yet, and least of all, of pricing or the supposed owner, who was reportedly very involved in the construction process.
This Is It was commissioned in 2020 and started construction the following year. The design was done in-house with engineering from Lateral Naval Architects.
A vessel as striking and luxurious as this one can't fly under the radar for long, even if it wanted to. With the imminent debut should come more coverage and, hopefully, even a proper, non-CGI look inside. So consider this a very nice teaser.
