Volvo has always forwarded a minimalist, clean design concept. Now the Swedish brand proves that it can go extreme and debuts the XC60 Black Edition. Well, as extreme as a Volvo can be.
The evil-looking XC60 Black Edition is available exclusively as the range-topping Black Edition only in the Ultimate top trim. The compact XC60 is now getting the dark, sinister look, which brings the Onyx Black paintwork. All exterior elements have been blacked out, badging included. The model rides on five double-spoke 21-inch alloy wheels in High Gloss Black.

The cabin also underwent the Black Edition treatment. Volvo put a black headliner inside to match the Charcoal seat upholstery. Customers can choose either the Ventilated Nappa Leather or the Nappa leather, leatherette, and textile combination.

The Orrefors crystal knob found its way on board the car for the extra premium feeling, as well as the meal mesh aluminum trim inlays. The driver will benefit from the presence of a 12.3-inch display with Google built in.

The Black Edition package does not interfere with the engine of the car. Therefore the XC60 remains available as a B5 AWD and as a Recharge T8.

The B5 AWD features a 48-volt mild-hybrid technology and is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers 247 horsepower (250 PS) and 258 lb-ft (350 Nm) of torque.

The Recharge T8 comes with the same 2.0-liter engine integrated into a plug-in hybrid, working alongside an electric motor for a combined output of 449 horsepower (455 PS) and 522 lb-ft (709 Nm), delivered to both axles via an eight-speed automatic. With such figures, the car can do 0-60 mph (0-97 kph) in just 4.5 seconds. A lithium-ion 18.8-kWh battery pack provides it with a 35-mile electric range.

Both versions have a top speed limited at 112 mph (180 kph), and so do all the models manufactured by the Scandinavians. It is Volvo's manner of reducing down to zero the number of serious injuries and fatalities in traffic.

The Volvo XC60 Black Edition will end up in the customers' hands in 2024. The B5 version will start at $57,500. Meanwhile, the T8 plug-in hybrid kicks off at %68,950. Prices do not include destination and delivery charges. The XC60 is Volvo's best-selling model in the United States, accounting for almost one third of the brand's total sales this year. Launched back in 2017, the compact model went through a facelift in 2021. An all-electric new generation will reportedly arrive in 2024.

The XC60 compact crossover is not the first model to get the Black Edition treatment. Volvo treated the S60 to the same "back to black" recipe in 2022. The sedan was available with both Onyx Black and Crystal White Metallic paintworks.
