Genesis, the luxury arm of Hyundai, recalled a handful of GV60 electric crossovers in the United States. As per documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the automatic locking retractor of the front passenger seatbelt may remain locked after engagement and retraction due to an interference.
South Korea-based Hyundai Motor Company became aware of this problem on June 27, following two warranty returns from GV60 vehicles produced for the US market. The front passenger seatbelt in said crossovers wouldn't extend after ALR engagement and retraction, therefore failing to comply with federal motor vehicle safety standard number 208 for occupant crash protection and number 209 for seatbelt assemblies.
Hyundai blames the supplier – Samsong of Changwon City – for improperly assembling the suspect assemblies during inventory rework. In other words, Samsong failed the South Korean automaker not once but twice.
An out-of-spec cam rib of the automatic locking retractor mechanism prevents the extension of the seatbelt webbing after the initial engagement. NASO, which stands for the North America Safety Decision Authority, issued a recall for 168 examples of the 2023 model year Genesis GV60. Suspect vehicles were produced in South Korea between November 5, 2022 and March 31, 2023 at the company's Ulsan plant.
Both dealers and owners will be notified about this recall by October 3, with dealers instructed to replace the front passenger seatbelt assembly if anything seems off. Regarding the supplier, Samsong introduced visual inspection equipment at the beginning of August.
Penned by Jung Myung-jin, the GV60 is the first Genesis EV based on the Hyundai E-GMP electric vehicle platform. Internally known as the JW, the compact luxury crossover is joined at the hip with the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6. Quite a bit more expensive than both, the GV60 starts at $59,290 (excluding the destination freight charge) as opposed to $41,450 for the Ioniq 5 and $42,600 for the EV6.
Very different from both of its brothers from the standpoint of exterior design, the Genesis is listed by the online configurator with extremely limited availability at the moment of writing. Not available nationwide, the GV60 comes in two all-wheel-drive specifications.
Advanced means 248 miles (399 kilometers) of driving range on the combined test cycle, a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with built-in satellite navigation, and many other standard goodies. 20-inch alloys, a power hands-free smart liftgate with automatic open, leather upholstery, aluminum trim, heated and ventilated front seats, a head-up display, and a wireless charger for your phone are only a few highlights.
Curiously enough, the $68,290 Performance version isn't as potent as the Ioniq 5 N or EV6 GT. Pressing the green button on the steering wheel summon 54 more ponies for up to 10 seconds at a time for a grand total of 483 horsepower, whereas boost mode improves peak torque from 446 to 516 pound-feet (605 to 700 Nm).
