Last year, 2023, was an excellent period for pickup trucks across the US automotive market. Ford and Toyota will indeed say that – although GM might also have a word with the Blue Oval sales team.
The revived compact pickup truck sector has seen the little Ford Maverick assert copious dominance over the segment and then some more. With 94k deliveries, it beat Hyundai's Santa Cruz almost three to one and Honda's larger mid-size Ridgeline unibody model by a large margin. Heck, it even defeated the F-150 PowerBoost with more deliveries of the Maverick hybrid.

The mid-size pickup truck sector, meanwhile, remains a fief that Toyota rules from a high throne – even though its N400 all-new generation was clearly not going to make an impact on sales, the outgoing Tacoma still managed to climb on top with a massive 235k deliveries, aided in December only by tiny numbers of the all-new generation. It was followed by the Chevy Colorado (71k) and the Nissan Frontier (58k), both having worse performance than in 2022. As for the heavyweights, the struggle between Ford, GM, and Ram is classic, of course.

The full-size light-duty sector was again dominated by the Ford F-Series, followed by the Chevrolet Silverado series and the Ram trucks. However, if you believe GM, they are the ones with the full-size pickup truck crown when they add the GMC Sierra to the tally. Anyway, one thing is certain: pickup trucks are doing better than ever across all segments, especially if we consider that the F-Series was the best-selling nameplate in America, followed by Chevy's Silverado and Ram's pickup family.

However, some people don't necessarily love the humongous pickup trucks that we see today on the market – a few decades ago, a Chevrolet C10 was about the same size as a current Ford Maverick or Toyota Tacoma! Speaking of Chevy's C/K series, it's always a good idea to be on the lookout for a classic pickup truck if you feel that the modern ones are far too imposing and complicated. Also, if money is no concern, you could always make the old-school C10 of your dreams – filled with classic style and modern technology.

One of the best ways to emphasize that is via the good folks over at Roadster Shop – and they recently finished the fourth example of the 'Legend Series,' dubbed as the 'Urban Cowboy' by its owner. This is a 1976 Chevrolet C10 that also holds the honor of being RS' first 'full' Legend Series remastered as a turn-key package. As such, it has brand-new bodywork, a shiny new dual-tone paintjob, plus an entire Avant Garde Design interior.

The treatment extends beneath the cockpit and body – the chassis platform is completely new as part of the Legend Series program. It is also fitted with a naturally aspirated 455-hp LT1 V8 engine hooked to an 8L90 transmission, making it a charm to cruise even at 90 miles per hour! Speaking of the drive, check out this full 'details and drive' video feature embedded below if you want to find out more.
