Sustainability is an essential aspect of tiny living, often reflected in the use of natural and repurposed materials when building and furnishing tiny homes. Seamlessly blending this type of rustic décor with premium appliances without looking tacky is an art. This iconic American tiny house designed by Handcrafted Movement proves it: its sustainable décor is delightfully rustic, yet perfectly modern in terms of living conditions, which makes it timeless.
No one could deny that the Writer's Retreat is one of the most beautiful tiny home designs of all time. Although Handcrafted Movement stopped including it in its offer many years ago, it's still unique and unmatched when it comes to mixing rustic design items with modern comfort features. Perfectly functional as a family home, Writer's Retreat would also be the perfect guest house or vacation rental in a picturesque location due to its special features.

Writer's Retreat looks like a really old house, yet functions like a contemporary home, and this is what makes it stand out. A 26-footer (7.9 meters), it includes one main sleeping loft in the front (70 square feet/6.5 square meters) and a smaller one in the back (24 square feet/2.2 square meters), better suited for storage. Before accessing these lofts, it reveals one of the most exquisite rustic-style main floor layouts.

The solid Bamboo hardwood floors with a "Rustic Barnwood" finish contrast heavily with the bright-white walls and ceilings, for that specific farmhouse look. A cozy fireplace (although electric) contributes to the vintage overall look. There's an abundance of Oregon Walnut throughout, and all of it is reclaimed.

One end of the house is configured as a comfy lounge room with a large sofa and scattered shelves. The oversized window brings the outdoors in, offering lovely views. The convertible sofa can provide extra accommodation. The access ladder for the loft can be stored above the sofa when not in use, almost turning into a décor item that cleverly integrates within the vintage interior.

True to its name, this lovely tiny reveals a unique built-in work desk with a coordinating chair. Impressive countertops made of reclaimed solid oak and walnut, can also double as a sturdy working area. A built-in Walnut dining chair with a leather cushion completes this functional setup with a retro vibe.

This home's exquisite craftsmanship is reflected even in the smallest details, from the rustic cabinet doors to the oil-rubbed, bronze and matte black hardware. The strong visual contrast effectively highlights each carefully chosen item. The overall interior style is like a work of art in itself, where every detail is a small, but essential piece of the puzzle.

What makes this home unique is how the rustic kitchen furniture, made from reclaimed solid wood, hides all the practical appliances you'd find in a contemporary kitchen. There's enough space for a four-burner range with a warming drawer, a large-capacity fridge, and a vented hood fan with LED lighting. Continuing the theme of sustainability, the kitchen also comes with an integrated pull-out drawer for garbage and recycling.

As practical as it is beautiful, the Writer's Retreat reveals unexpected surprises at every step. It effectively uses every inch of space without cluttering. You'll discover a unique built-in storage closet with a hanging rod for clothing items and with lighting. In another spot, you'll find a well-integrated nook with coat hooks, shoe cabinets, and umbrella storage.

A wonderful corner table with an asymmetric design, also made from solid wood, reveals itself at the back of the stairs. With just enough room for one seat, it offers a delightful private space in front of a small window. At the same time, it's so well-crafted that it becomes a work of art in itself, part of the overall décor. Tiny leather accents and wood furniture items are masterfully scattered throughout, like treasures waiting to be discovered.

Like the kitchen, the bathroom is also a seamless mixture of old and new. Solid cabinets and shelves made from reclaimed wood in dark tones hide or frame modern basic appliances. This rustic-style bathroom is equipped with LED lighting, a wall fan, an energy-efficient toilet, and even a washing machine. Plus, it comes with unexpectedly generous storage in multiple cabinets and shelves.

When it's time to rest after a busy day working at one of the home's multiple desk areas, the main loft bedroom reveals a large, comfortable bed, flanked by windows and discrete light fixtures. The asymmetric steps (also rustic looking) leading to it are both convenient and decorative.

The Writer's Retreat displays remarkable craftsmanship and attention to detail. It exudes the charm of an old, historic dwelling, filled with collectible items, yet it's modern and functional in terms of comfort. Most importantly, it demonstrates an elegant way of incorporating sustainability, a trend that has grown in popularity with many vacation rentals today.
