The Avatr 12 is the car that is trying to get a piece of the pie that the automotive giants have been sharing. But there is still a long way to go. Here they are, with a new car, developed by Avatr Technology in partnership with tech giant Huawei.
It is an electric premium sedan that might just have a chance against the Mercedes’ EQE sedan and BMW’s i5. The car is the brainchild of a collaboration between Avatr Technology, Changan Automobile, CATL, and Huawei, and it is designed to go straight to the mid-to-large size segment.

China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has released photos and info on the upcoming model.

Built on the EP1 platform, the AVTR will be available in both single-motor and dual-motor configurations. The single-motor Avatr 12 is powered by an electric unit that is mounted on the rear axle. It develops 230 kW, which would be 308 horsepower or 313 PS.

The dual-motor version comes with all-wheel drive and a maximum power of 425 kW (569 horsepower/578 PS). The electric motors are supplied by Huawei.

200 kph (124 mph) is the top speed of the model. Energy is stored in a Lithium-Ion battery pack supplied by CATL, with a 90.4-kWh capacity for the base model and 116.8-kWh capacity for the dual-motor version.

The five-seater will be 5,020 millimeters (197.6 inches) long, 1,999 millimeters (78.7 inches) wide, and 1,460 millimeters (57.4 inches) high, with a 3,020-millimeter (118.9-inch) wheelbase. Avatr also submitted different figures for the height (1,450 millimeters instead of 1,460), but that might be the effect of a possible air suspension.

Split LED lights flank a closed grille, setting up an aggressive look of the front fascia. The sleek roofline, made entirely of glass, leads to a massive rear with narrow horizontal LED taillights. Customers will be able to choose from four different wheel designs in 20 and 21 inches, according to the file submitted with MIIT, and they will be able to spec their cars with cameras instead of side mirrors.

There is a large 15.6-inch touchscreen floating above the center console. A 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster displays relevant information regarding driving.

It will fight Nio’s ET7 in China, but if it is ever going to land in Europe or the US, it’s going to have double trouble with Mercedes’ EQE and BMW’s i5. With these proportions, it actually slots right between the EQS and EQE.

Avatr launched the company’s first model, the 11 SUV, on August 9, 2022. Deliveries kicked off at the end of December. The high-ride model starts at RMB 319,900 ($44,880).

With sales going slow – only 1,753 units sold in June, according to the China Passenger Car Association – Avatr is considering introducing ICE-powered cars in the lineup as well. But first, they have to roll out the Avatr 12.
