At the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) back in January, Japanese carmaker Subaru dropped a bomb. For the first time in history, a car crafted by Subaru Tecnica International was to leave the confines of its home market and head abroad, to the United States.
The car that will enter the history books as the most powerful Subaru ever is called STI S209. Based on the WRX STI Nurburgring Challenge racecar that won the 24 hours endurance race at the German track in 2018, the 209 is now starting to be seen on U.S. roads.
With the launch of this car Subaru wanted to make sure people will remember the STI for years to come. Packing a reworked variant of Subaru’s EJ25 2.5-liter turbocharged Boxer engine paired to a 6-speed manual transmission, the car develops 341 horsepower and 330 lb.-ft. of torque.
Visually, the STI stands out thanks to the revised bodywork that extends the vehicle’s overall width to 72.4 inches, 1.7 inches wider than a standard WRX STI. All this extra width is achieved by using wider fenders, front canards and rear wing.
The car rides on 19 x 9-inch forged BBS wheels shod in purpose-made Dunlop SP Sport Maxx GT600A tires.
The chassis of the vehicle has been revised too, and was fitted with a flexible strut tower bar and draw stiffeners.
On the inside, the S209 sports Recaro front bucket seats with silver-hued inserts, Ultrasuede with silver stitching D-shaped steering wheel and tons of STI badges spread all over.
The Japanese say they will built only 209 units of the STI S209, available in either WR Blue Pearl/gray wheels and Crystal White Pearl/gold wheels. Pricing will be announced by the carmaker in the coming weeks
The STI line of cars started in 2000 with the S201 and up until the S208 of 2018 all these cars were only available in Japan.
