Introduced in 2016 for the 2017 model year, the fifth generation of the Impreza has been upgraded in Japan and those changes should trickle down to North America as well. From an aesthetic standpoint, the grille design and lower bumper are modified while the headlights and taillights look a bit more modern.
You will be hard-pressed to tell the facelift apart from the outgoing Impreza, but nevertheless, Subaru is fairly traditional about makeovers when you think about it. To this effect, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the visual differences are so subtle. New wheel designs are also featured for both the sedan and hatchback, and thus, let’s head on over to the interior of the 2020 Impreza.

Across the lineup, Eyesight Touring Assist comes as standard to reduce driver fatigue and errors by assisting with steering, braking, and accelerating. Other Vehicles and lane markings are also recognized by the system, which uses a radar sensor and front-facing video cameras. Adaptive headlights with auto high beam control are optional, along with memory for the driver’s seat.

Even parking is made easier, not though the reversing camera but the door mirrors that face down when backing up the 2020 Impreza to offer a better view of the curb. Like the driver’s seat, Subaru also features a memory function for the electric door mirrors and automatic folding function when locking up the car.

As ever, the 1.6- and 2.0-liter boxer four-cylinder engines soldier on with minimal changes. There’s no information in regard to the WRX or WRX STI available for the time being, and knowing Subaru’s limited development budget, we won’t be keeping our fingers crossed for a revolution rather than an evolution.

The 1.6iL EyeSight is the starting point of the Japanese lineup for the 2020 Impreza, and the FB16 is rated at 115 PS (113 horsepower) at 6,200 rpm. Torque maxes out at 148 Nm (109 pound-feet) at 3,600 rpm, which means you’ll have to rev the hell out of the engine to pass on the fast lane.

The slightly larger FB20 is a DOHC design as well, naturally aspirated like Subaru likes its engines for improved reliability. 154 PS (152 horsepower) and 196 Nm (145 pound-feet) are the ratings for the Japanese model with this plant.
