Seven, ladies and gentlemen! No less than seven Subaru models received the most telling accolade from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety for the 2019 model year, starting with the Ascent mid-size crossover with seating for seven.
To qualify for Top Safety Pick+, the IIHS claims that “a vehicle must earn good ratings in the driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraint tests.” But that’s not all. The vehicle “also must earn an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention and a good headlight rating.”

In addition to the Ascent, the remaining Subaru models crowned by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety include the Crosstrek, Impreza sedan, Impreza hatchback, Legacy, Outback, WRX, and WRX STI. But curiously enough, the 2019 Forester couldn’t do better than Top Safety Pick. The reason comes in the guise of headlights performance, deemed “acceptable” with and without the curve-adaptive system.

“Each year we continue to improve and innovate the safety features in our vehicles for our customers,” declared Thomas J. Doll, president and chief operating officer of Subaru in America. “For the Subaru brand to lead the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ awards with seven winners reflects our commitment to making safety the top priority in our vehicles.”

In addition to Japanese quality, Subaru has this much success in terms of safety thanks to EyeSight. The system makes use of two color cameras that flank the rearview mirror to scan the road ahead of any danger that can’t be easily anticipated by the driver. These cameras enable lane keep assist and sway warning, adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking and throttle management, and so forth.

Described as “the culmination of everything Subaru engineers know about safety,” EyeSight has been found to reduce rear-end crashes with injuries by up to 85 percent. Coincidence or not, the data that backs up this claim comes from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
