As it’s customary of a Japanese automaker at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2019, Subaru has a couple of surprises in store for enthusiasts of the boxer-engined breed. More to the point, an STI-ified Forester will duke it out with the Impreza STI Concept from January 11th to January 13th.
The compact-sized crossover from Gunma features Fighter Gray paintwork that complements the 19-inch aluminum wheels and six-piston caliper Brembo braking system. Also on the visual front, the honeycomb mesh inset and STI badging work together like a charm with the modified bumpers with yellow accents, dive planes up front, and go-faster side skirts.

Moving on to the Impreza STI Concept, this fellow is based on the five-door hatchback that retails at $19,095 in the United States for the 2.0i with the five-speed manual transmission. The most obvious of modifications start with the aerodynamic body kit that integrates black-painted parts such as the lip spoiler.

Also present are lightweight alloy wheels, a black-painted roof that contrasts with the white paintwork, and a center-mounted exhaust system with two chrome-finished tailpipes. Both concepts share the e-Boxer hybrid powertrain, which Subaru hasn’t detailed for these applications.

In the case of the XV e-Boxer that serves as the hybrid brother of the Crosstrek (plug-in) Hybrid for the U.S. market, Subaru leverags technology from the Toyota Prius, including an electric motor that adds 13.6 PS and 65 Nm to the 2.0-liter engine’s 145 PS and 188 Nm.

If STI were to tap into e-Boxer realm for series production, then that would pave the way for the next generation of the WRX and WRX STI. Subaru is understood to implement some sort of hybrid assistance, which sounds a-OK considering that every player in the industry is moving in this direction.

In addition to these concepts, Subaru has two models with custom parts in the pipeline for the Tokyo Auto Salon, based on the Levorg and WRX STI. The motorsports exhibit, on the other hand, includes the likes of the BRZ CG ROBOT Racing 2018, WRX STI NBR Challenge 2018, BRZ GT 300 2018, and WRX STI All Japan Rally Entertainment Vehicle.
