After what feels like forever, Toyota and Subaru have finally agreed to make another generation of the iconic sports car. However, this prototype has just been spied at the Nurburgring, indicating that the BRZ may be coming up with a new look.
Much has changed since the FR-S, BRZ and GT 86 came out back in 2013. The Mazda MX-5, for one thing, now redefines what it is to be light. What's more, the 2019 models have almost as much power from their revised Skyactiv 2-liter engines.

But the BRZ will have to soldier on for a little while longer, and Subaru is nothing if not an engineering company. This updated version is sure to have many suspension tweaks designed to make it more enjoyable and fast on the track. Unfortunately, we suspect the facelift will also increase prices.

The engine will probably remain unchanged. Currently, the BRZ and 86 both boast 205 horsepower from their flat-4. However, the automatic models have 5 less.

Our spyshots show the 2020 or 2021 BRZ testing at the Nurburgring track in Germany. We wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the development work was already carried out at the reveal happens within the next few months.

This would be the second major update for the Toyobaru, after the one in 2017. The changes are concentrated at the front of this prototype, featuring a wider main grille with vertical intakes on either side. The front fenders appear a bit wider and vents have been installed, most likely to cool the brakes.

The BRZ feels like it's been left behind in the technology department, so maybe it will also receive a new infotainment system from either the Corolla or Impreza.

Besides the new Toyobaru, the two companies will also collaborate on electric cars and AWD models. However, the hottest rumor of them all is that an engine from the Subaru Ascent. That's a 2.4-liter FA24, which could be tuned to generate between 220 and 230 horsepower.
