The Clio is one of the most popular cars in Europe, but Renault has had to concede that it needs a jacked up version as well. And here it is, seen undergoing testing with what looks like a real production body underneath all that camo.
The car has never been rumored, as far as we know, and it's quite interesting. You see, Renault's forte is designing, so the company seems to have decided against just adding body cladding to the Clio 5 as Ford did with the Fiesta Active.
The so-called Clio SUV has a different front bumper and new taillights, just to name a few features we can make out. In addition to that, it will have the usual array of visual aids like fender inserts and roof rails.
An increased ride height gives this car an appearance that's very similar to the Sandero Stepway, which is also made by Renault. Of course, the architecture is the same as the standard Clio hatchback, with the lack of rear pro shafts being seen in these photos.
The engines which are rumored for the next Clio should also be installed here, namely a new 1-liter 3-cylinder with around 100 HP in turbo form, the updated 1.5 dCi and potentially even the 1.3-liter from the Kadjar facelift. Gearbox choices should include a manual and some kind of auto, either a robotized one or the efficient double clutch (EDC).
The Clio SUV is in no way a replacement for the Captur, which will most likely land around 2020 and be a bit larger. It's not uncommon for a carmaker to have two slightly different small crossovers: Kia Niro and Stonic, VW T-Roc and T-Cross, Nissan Juke and Kicks.
The Clio SUV should see a new kind of interior design, much more minimalist, as we saw in 2014 on the Eolab concept.
