There’s no shortage of strong specifications when it comes to the sixth-generation Chevrolet Camaro. The SS has always been a worthy Mustang GT competitor, while the high-performance ZL1 version is what Chevy would throw at the Shelby GT500.
In terms of being road-legal, the ZL1 is obviously the way to go if you want a flagship Camaro. It’s got everything you might want or need from a muscle car, and then some. It’s actually surprisingly capable around a race track, which isn’t something you could say about the Challenger Hellcat, for example.
In terms of performance, the ZL1 is powered by a 6.2-liter LT4 supercharged V8 engine, good for 650 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque. It’s basically the same engine you got in the old C7 Corvette Z06, capable of getting the Camaro to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds, while a quarter mile is dispatched in a little over 11 seconds.
The thing is, some people need to cover that quarter mile a lot quicker, and short of performing all the necessary mods yourself, GM saw fit to provide you with a factory-option in the latest-generation COPO Camaro, a non-road legal limited edition drag car.
The 2023 variant happens to feature a new engine compared to the outgoing 2022 model with its 572 ci V8. It’s called the COPO 632, and it’ll put down 1,004 horsepower and 872 lb-ft of torque on street-grade 93 octane pump gas – and all this without a supercharger, mind you.
Now, this particular COPO Camaro that you’re currently admiring is the 43rd example produced for the 2023 model year, and it just sold for $147,000.
Visual highlights include the cowl-induction hood, side mirror delete, wheelie bars, parachute, plus a set of 15” Bogart wheels with Hoosier drag racing slicks doing the grip work. Mechanically, you get Strange Engineering calipers at all four corners, and a four-link setup for the suspension with adjustable coilovers.
The interior is fully customized for drag racing, as you can see. Features include the safety cage, COPO-branded bucket seats with five-point harnesses, driver-side netting, dash-mounted switchgear, a Hurst Quarter Stick pistol-grip shifter, and auxiliary gauges for fuel pressure, oil pressure, coolant temp, and transmission fluid temp.
As for that 632 ci V8 engine, we already told you how much power it makes, but you should also get a load of these specs: Meziere electric water pump, PWR aluminum radiator, trunk-mounted fuel cell, and an ATI Performance Products three-speed automatic gearbox sending the output to the rear wheels.
So, just how quick is this thing? Well, a Challenger Demon 170 can run a quarter mile in about 8.9 seconds, if everything goes right. The 2023 COPO Camaro? It’s even faster, by a considerable margin.
