Remember the first-generation Dodge Durango? Sure you do. It’s what you got if you wanted an SUV variant of the Dakota pickup. In other words, you got a truck-based people hauler that could hold up to seven passengers and tow up to 7,500 lbs.
They first rolled these out in 1998, and in the following years, Dodge added new paint options, standard leather seats on various trims, a couple of new V8 engines and some interior upgrades.

Those who wanted to go fast leaned on the Durango R/T, which came with a tuned 5.9-liter Magnum V8. But when that wasn’t enough, eagle-eye buyers could opt for the Shelby-tuned SP 360 specification, whose supercharged 5.9-liter V8 engine would produce 360 horsepower and 412 lb-ft of torque. Plenty of grunt for everyday use.

These were limited production models, with Shelby having built just 300 of them. As luck would have it, you’re looking at #33 of 300 as we speak, getting auctioned off through Doug DeMuro’s Cars & Bids with just 10,600 miles on the clock.

There’s a lot to like about the Durango Shelby SP 360, starting with those 17-inch chrome wheels, the Kenne Bell supercharger, ram air system, revised headers and sports suspension, custom body kit, the racing stripes, Cerullo XR bucket seats for front and rear passengers, carbon fiber-like accents, special badging and more.

In terms of convenience features, we count the third-row seats (imagine if these were bucket seats too), CD player, air conditioning, flip down rear DVD and VCR player, power windows and locks, and of course cruise control.

According to the ad, this one-of-300 SUV was also fitted with an aftermarket K&N exhaust system and a custom knock sensor gauge.

What’s not so great is that there are a few rock chips, scratches and dings, while the rear monitor is said to be inoperable – still these are not really dealbreakers.

How does this compare to a Durango Hellcat?

Poorly, rather. Technically, you don’t even need a Hellcat to smoke the Shelby SP 360 off the line. Even the Durango SRT 392 with its 6.4-liter HEMI V8 will do the trick easily, as it packs 475 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque.

The industry has come a very long way since the late 90s and comparing modern-day cars with their predecessors is rarely fair, if ever.

As for how the Durango SRT Hellcat does when compared to this older Shelby-tuned variant, well, just know that the former puts down 710 horsepower and 645 lb-ft of torque courtesy of a supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI V8. And yes, you can still buy a Hellcat-spec Durango today, with prices starting from $93,605.

This 1999 Durango, on the other hand, is currently worth $17,500 to the highest bidder, with one day left to go in the auction. Still, what better way to show everyone your disdain for EVs and all other modern-day contraptions than by driving an aggressive-looking 20+ year old SUV?
