In addition to NAIAS, the second biggest auto show of January 2018 is the Tokyo Auto Salon. And for Nissan, it is the best venue to showcase a flurry of production car-based concepts such as the Leaf Grand Touring.
Previewed by a single photo (!!!) of the exterior, the Grand Touring Concept is specified with two-tone dual-spoke alloy wheels wrapped in performance-oriented tires. The visual makeover further includes a black-painted hood, roof, door handles, and side mirrors, as well as more aggressive side skirt extensions.
The black detailing goes together perfectly with the matte-finish silver paint, but Nissan didn’t do anything to the innards of the Leaf Grand Touring. The concept, therefore, is equipped with a 40-kWh lithium-ion battery and an electric motor that drives the front axle with 147 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque. And just like the NISMO Concept before it, the Grand Touring features a torsion beam rear axle.
In addition to the Leaf, the X-Trail (Rogue) and NV350 Caravan also get the Grand Touring treatment for the Tokyo Auto Salon 2018. All three models are described as being perfect for young individuals, though that’s the sort of dull talk any PR department would say to hype up a product.
Moving on to more production-ready vehicles, the salon will see Nissan display three concepts blessed with the know-how of Autech. The tuning company that serves as a subsidiary of Nissan took to modify the Serena e-Power, Note e-Power, and X-Trail with plenty of sporty bits and pieces, but Autech models have always slotted below the NISMO-badged cars.
To this effect, Nissan will gladly sell you the Serena NISMO and Note e-Power NISMO in Japan. As for the X-Trail sport utility vehicle, the Japanese automaker offers something called NISMO Performance Package, which is more of a visual upgrade than a suite of go-faster parts.
Last, but certainly not least, the Tokyo Auto Salon is the place where Nissan will remind everyone that the 370Z is getting older with each and every passing year by showcasing the Fairlady Z Heritage Edition. Other than the steering wheel being moved on the right-hand side, there’s not much else to set this model apart from the U.S.-spec 370Z Heritage Edition.
