While it may initially seem like another odd parking fail the silver Lexus LC Convertible looking exactly like an automotive popsicle was actually subjected to an official “12-hour deep freeze extreme test of its quality.” Naturally, it survived the ordeal with flying colors, and Lexus now has a nice short feature (embedded below) to brag about.
Customers buying the Lexus LC Convertible will probably root for clear blue skies and lots of sunshine when driving the Japanese grand tourer. But the harsh reality is that climate changes have taken a huge toll on our everyday life, and extreme weather conditions have become much more common than anyone would like to recognize.
That won’t be a problem for the LC Convertible, though, even if the owner forgets the top down while the temperature drops way below our comfort levels. Make that minus 18 degrees Celsius, or -0.4 degrees Fahrenheit, according to a recent experiment undertaken by Lexus’s British division.
Confident it can easily survive the extreme conditions of being inside an industrial refrigerator for 12 hours, Lexus sent a standard unit dressed up in a lovely combination of silver and tan to the Large Climatic Chamber at the Millbrook Proving Ground in the United Kingdom.
It’s a 468-cubic meter (16,527-cu ft) unit that welcomes both defense equipment as well as road vehicles to a climate that can vary between +85 and –60 degrees Celsius (185 to –76 degrees Fahrenheit).
The LC Convertible’s -18 degrees visit might seem like an easy one given the possible conditions inside (which also include a 98% relative humidity), but as it turns out, even rubber freezes at that temperature.
And, to make sure the Lexus looks good on camera at the end of the test, it was also given a water spray before going into the freezer. So, it’s no wonder it emerged completely covered in ice at the end of the 12-hour ordeal.
