Underpinned by the MQB A0 vehicle architecture, the T-Cross is the next big thing from Volkswagen. Or so the German automaker from Wolfsburg thinks, claiming that production of the newcomer could increase up to 500,000 examples per year.
No less than five facilities are expected to welcome the T-Cross to their assembly lines, ranging from Europe to South America, India, and two factories in China. For the European Union, the Pamplona plant in Spain will churn out the small crossover.

Subcompact in size (4.1 meters) but larger than the Polo (4.05 meters), the T-Cross promises class-leading cargo volume in the trunk (455 liters) and a spacious interior. The width of the car, however, will make it hard to squeeze three abreast on the rear seat. 1,558 millimeters tall, the T-Cross shares many of its oily bits with the SEAT Arona, which can’t be had with the 4Drive system.

Volkswagen doesn’t plant to offer 4Motion in this application either, but time will tell if demand will make the automaker change its mind. Higher trim levels come with 18-inch allow wheels, and if you so wish, the instrument cluster can be fitted with the digital instrument cluster that Audi likes to refer to as virtual cockpit.

What about the engine and transmission options? At launch, the smaller brother of the T-Roc will be available with no less than three TSI engines and the 95-horsepower 1.6-liter TDI. The 1.0-liter three-cylinder mills make do with 95 and 115 horsepower. Level up to the 1.5-liter, and you’re looking at 150 horsepower.

Five- and six-speed manuals have been confirmed by Volkswagen, and later on, the 1.5 TSI will be available with a dual-clutch transmission. In regard to infotainment solutions, the T-Cross will be optionally available with an eight-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Wireless charging, four USB ports (two up front and two at the rear), and two-tone dashboard pads are in the pipeline as well.

If you were wondering, Volkswagen didn’t say a word about bringing the T-Cross to the United States of America.
