The Cee’d is, without a shadow of a doubt, the nameplate that put Kia on the map in Europe. The second generation of the Cee’d has been around since 2012, and 2018 will see the compact-sized model get refreshed from the ground up, inside and out.
The carparazzi have caught the 2018 Kia Cee’d camouflaged time and time again, but this time around, the South Korean automaker plans to offer a glimpse of what’s in the offing with the help of a concept. Scheduled to be unveiled on September 12, the concept vehicle “puts forward a bold vision for a potential member of the next-generation Cee’d family.” Wait, what?
Don’t, however, take Kia’s view on the yet-unnamed concept for a joke. Remember the Hyundai i30, which is basically the half-brother of the all-new Cee’d? Considering the i30 is available in Fastback body style, then Kia has all the right reasons to expand the Cee’d family with a shooting brake.
From the rear three-quarter view, the concept oozes with Stinger styling and prides itself on a Porsche-inspired full-width taillight. Looking closer, the C-pillars are beautified by “GT” badging. If Kia can make a case for building the Cee’d Shooting Brake, then don’t expect the big wheels and mirrorless design of the IAA-bound concept. The lack of B-pillars, however, is definitely doable.
The shooting brake could be the third body style for the 2018 Kia Cee’d after the five-door hatchback and station wagon. A hot hatchback should also make the cut, though most European customers will be interested in powerplants such as the three-cylinder 1.0 T-GDI and 1.6 CRDi.
Scheduled to go into production at the Kia plant in Zilina, Slovakia, the third-generation Cee’d features the newest variant of the tiger-nose grille and four-point LED headlights similar in design to what Porsche has to offer. Beyond the shooting brake variant, the rumor mill suggests that Kia might also be tempted into offering a jacked-up Cee’d with crossover influences.
