In a press release about the Daimler subsidiary Accumotive, the three-pointed star confirmed that EQC production would be “ramped-up in spring 2019” at the Bremen plant in Germany, then reach the market in the middle of 2019. To this effect, the electric crossover will arrive at dealers for the 2020 model year.
Accumotive is specialized in batteries for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, as well as the batteries for 48-volt mild hybrids such as the M256 engine used by the 53 Series from Mercedes-AMG. The company plans to double the number of employees by the end of 2018, gearing up for producing the 80-kWh battery for the EQC at a second plant.

The manufacturing facilities in Kamenz, Germany will receive €500 million to support this production ramp-up, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Daimler AG also operates facilities in Beijing, Tuscaloosa, Bangkok, Sindelfingen, and Stuttgart, translating to eight factories and six locations.

Turning our attention to the EQC, the 400 with 4Matic promises more than 320 kilometers (200 miles) under the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure. The dual-motor setup has 407 PS (402 horsepower) and 765 Nm (564 pound-feet) to offer, translating to 5.1 seconds from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph).

Top speed is limited to 180 km/h (112 mph), which is more than enough even for driving on the highway. Better still, Mercedes-Benz confirmed the EQC 400 4Matic can tow up to 1,800 kilograms (3,968 pounds) when properly equipped. Charging from 10 to 80 percent takes 40 minutes by means of DC fast charging, and the EQC 400 4Matic comes standard with an AC on-board charger capable of 7.4 kW.

Over at Audi, the e-tron quattro has the upper hand thanks to the 9.6-kW charger. Make that 11 or 22 kW three-phase in Europe, which is years ahead of what the three-pointed star offers in the EQC. Be that as it may, don’t forget that Mercedes’ information on the EQC is preliminary at this point in time.
