Mercedes says it could have launched the GLE Coupe when the original BMW X6 came out, but there's no getting around the fact that they made a piglet. Hopefully, starting with a clean slate will produce better results.
The brand new GLE base model has just been revealed, and it undercuts the equivalent BMW X5 by quite a bit. However, some of those euros or dollars will come piling back on once you click the "Coupe" button.
Part of it is a cash grab for Mercedes, which hopes to boost its bottom line with lifestyle models. However, the GLE Coupe will also feature different tuning and more standard equipment.
It's the same problem as with the BMW X4 and X6. Honestly, it would be far better if the Germans could develop bespoke bodies, based on fuller tracks and with shorter overhangs. Huge interest in the Q8 proves Audi did it right.
This particular GLE Coupe seems to be a regular model, but the AMGs have already been spotted testing. We have every indication that 2-liter turbo engines will be available, like a twin-turbo diesel with 245 HP and 500 Nm. However, the bulk of the range will be made up of advanced new inline-6 units.
If the new Benz models that have already been equipped in this manner are any indication, the GLE Coupe will have the most refined, gruntiest engines on the market. However, we're still eager to see drag races between the 600 horsepower X6 M and the 63 S.

So what about the design?
Well, this prototype has just been spotted in Stuttgart, and we can't say that we're in love. The front end saves money by looking just like as the regular GLE. Meanwhile, the taillights are all now and wrap around an i30 Fastback-like sloped roof and trunk. It's the same problem as with the BMW X4 and X6.
