Although the fourth generation Mazda MX-5 / Miata broke cover last year in September, it is only now we get to see what powers it from under that sleek sexy hood. Two engines will be available for the moment, but it seems the automaker is already considering a more powerful version.
The 2016 Mazda Miata is offered with either a 1.5-liter engine, making 129 hp and 111 lb-ft (150 Nm), or a 2-liter unit generating 155 hp and 148 lb-ft (200 Nm) of torque. Not a huge increase over the last generation, but don’t forget the new MX-5 is about 220 lbs (100 kg) lighter, which means its power-to-weight ratio is better and it will feel even more lively.

Still, according to Motoring, the manufacturer is actually planning to add even more power to the range in the near future, with a larger displacement or a turbocharged engine being under consideration.

"We will have this ND-series model for maybe ten years, which gives us plenty of time to make many variants," Mazda global PR chief Kudo Hidetoshi told the publication. "And yes, a turbocharged or MPS variant is one of the options we will definitely consider."

The automaker could simply drop the larger 2.5-liter Skyactiv-G offered on the top spec Mazda3 model in case it wants to go the naturally aspirated path. Still, Mazda's engine range is said to gain a turbocharger soon, which seems to be a better choice regarding fuel consumption and emissions.

Whatever it will be, we’re sure it will make the tiny roadster put a smile even on Grumpy Cat’s face.
