Speaking of flesh and bone, the new iteration of the highly acclaimed roadster is the meanest looking one up until now. Styling matters a lot today and Mazda knows that because it managed to combine two of the most interesting designs of today.

Yeah, if you squint a bit, you can see the shapes of the Jaguar F-Type and the Maserati Gran Turismo combined to create the new MX-5. However, Mazda claims this trickery is actually a new layer of the Kodo design language.

Whatever it is, we like it, even if this is not quite on the same wavelength with the design used for the rest of the current range. Remember when automakers were filling up their lineups with cars that weren’t looking like rescaled copies? We do and because Mazda made the MX-5 different it has another star from us.

The details that matter

Designers also nailed it with the interior. Just look at how simple yet good-looking the cockpit looks. Bolstered seats simple surfaces made out of quality materials, an uncluttered central console and a three-spoked steering wheel coming at just the right thickness.

Wondering how this little beast will feel like to drive? We can’t tell you for the moment since the car hasn’t entered production yet. Still, we can tell you it comes with Skyactiv Technology and the engineers that designed it are saying it weighs 100 kg (220 lb) less than the outgoing model, meaning it will tip the scales at just 1,025 kg (2,260 lb).

Under the hood, Mazda prepared a 1.5-liter four-cylinder mated to a choice of six-speed manual or automatic transmissions as well as a 2-liter SkyActiv four-cylinder which, as far as we know, makes 155 hp in the Mazda3. Whatever the case, both engines have probably went through some fine-tuning to better suit a roadster.
