In case you didn’t know, Mazda has been proactively developing biomass technologies for several years and is now happy to announce it has improved the technique to produce bioplastic parts suitable for both the interior and exterior of a car.
This newly-developed material will help Mazda reduce its environmental impact, using plant-derived materials to cut petroleum use along with CO2 emissions. Oh, and since these bioplastics can be dyed, they don’t require traditional painting, thus eliminating volatile organic compounds emissions too.

Known as Mazda Biotechmaterial, the company achieved the industry’s first high strength heat-resistant and plant-based bioplastic for interior parts, including seat upholstery and the latest technology breakthrough makes the material suitable even for external components.

Optimizing the process

This was achieved by optimizing the composition of a highly moldable new bioplastic base material using additives and coloring agents as well as enhancing molding specifications. Thanks to this, the exterior parts that will be produced using the new bioplastic will be as sturdy as classic painted ABS plastic and feature a high-quality finish.

Parts made out of dyed bioplastic will feature a smooth, mirror-like surface and enchant your eyes with a deep hue that will last for longer, unlike traditional paint coated components.

The 2015 Mazda Miata / MX-5 entering dealerships next year will be wearing such bioplastic components at the interior, while the other upcoming models will inherit them on the outside.

Until then, Mazda will display its new bioplastics at the Eco-Products 2014 technology exhibit in Tokyo, starting today.
