Just three years ago British carmaker Land Rover unleashed into the world the latest generation of the mighty Defender. But three years is also more than enough time for any vehicle to capture the attention of custom builders the world over.
One of the biggest customizers of Land Rover vehicles, Kahn, was captivated by the SUV as well, and we've already seen a number of custom parts and projects for it being cooked up in the UK. None of them however seems as extreme as the Flying Huntsman 90 Spyder.

Flying Huntsman is one of Kahn's side businesses, and you might know the name thanks to other creations based on the Defender, stuff like the 6x6, Longnose, or Homage II. In the near future though, the 90 Spyder will likely become the real star of the lineup.

The vehicle will be based on the Land Rover Defender 90, the three-door variant of the SUV. It's an imposing machine right from the factory floor, but what Khan has planned for it exceeds even the wildest dreams.

The main modification to be made to the SUV is in the custom's name. Its roof will be chopped off to make room for a spyder arrangement. The original roof will be replaced by a removable canvas, leaving the two people inside with nothing but the sky above their heads.

The removal of the roof will require some serious modifications, especially to the rear of the SUV. As revealed in the initial renderings released by Khan, the straight back of Defender will suffer a serious transformation to be suitable for the spyder name and the grand tourer aspirations.

The bodywork modifications will be made using NS3 grade aluminum, shaped in a way to be "harking back to the golden age of British coachbuilding."

Despite the modifications, and the possibility of storing the removable roof in the specially created cowl, Kahn says the factory luggage capacity of the Spyder will somehow not be affected.

No mention is made as to whether mechanical alterations will be performed on the Defender 90, but we do know they will be highly limited in this form. More to the point, just eight of them will be produced per year, with each of the base Defenders scheduled to spend six months in the shop.

We're to expect the first ones to hit the roads in the last quarter of 2024. Each of these spyder SUVs will be different from the other, individually numbered, and possibly wearing wheels unlike anything else on the market, should customers choose to go for the bespoke, one-of-one wheel set option that will be made available.

Kahn makes no mention of the cost of the build, but it did open a sort of waiting list, asking potential buyers to fill in their contact info and await more details.
