The Kia EV6 GT finished as the highest-ranking performance electric vehicle entered in the Mille Miglia race and sixth overall. The EV6 GT was the first-ever Korean car to take part in the 1000 Miglia Green race.
1000 Miglia's history goes way back to 1927 in Italy. The race had a straightforward goal: cover 1,000 miles (1,609 km) across Italy over a single day, as fast as possible. Even though some details have changed in the meanwhile, the event is essentially an endurance race. More recently, a sub-category involving just EVs, the 1000 Miglia Green, was created.
This year's event was the longest in the race's nearly 100-year history. It spanned five days and over 2,000 km (1,243 miles). Behind the Kia EV6 GT's wheel were pro rally drivers Jade Paveley and Ross Leach, the only team to represent Great Britain in the race. Moreover, this was the first time the EV6 GT entered a competitive, FIA-approved motor race.
The two rally drivers are, in fact, husband and wife – using their impressive rally experience, they skillfully navigated the race and its many stages, even taking wins in some of them. The team brought the EV6 GT home in sixth place, making it the highest-scoring performance EV.
The EV6 GT uses a twin electric motor setup that delivers 577 hp and 740 Nm (546 lb-ft.) through all four wheels. IT can speed up to 62 mph (100 kph) in only 3.5 seconds, while the official top speed is 162 mph (261 kph) - making it the second fastest EV to enter this year's race.
Furthermore, the EV's powerful 77.4 kWh battery enables it to reach 263 miles (423 km) of range per charge. Due to the vehicle's E-GMP platform, which supports 800 V charging, it takes very little to juice the battery – a 10-90% charge takes only 18 minutes at the fastest charging points.
This year's race was split into five legs – some were driven under police escort, while others took place on closed roads. All the participating EVs were supposed to complete each using a single charge. Charging was offered via Kia charge and some destination charging at hotels at the end of the day.
Kia initially had a rough start due to timing equipment failure. The EV6 GT ended in the 11th position overall but moved up to the 9th position the following day. The third day involved one of the most picturesque sections of the race; the Tuscan hills pass – the rally duo finished the day in seventh position.
And finally, the last shortest legs (Alessandria to Milan and then Milan to Brescia) saw the EV6 GT, and the couple improved by a single position, finishing in sixth place. Paolo Piva and Matteo Ferraglio snatched first place in a Tesla Model Y.
