Normally, you wouldn’t need to take out a Toyota VVTi engine’s crankshaft if you are not performing a major repair job after something went wrong.
The job is very complex and you will have to disassemble the whole engine. So, you’ll basically need a full set of tools and a car elevator or a jack and jackstands. Here are the main steps:

- First you need to remove the gearbox
- Then take out the clutch assembly and the flywheel
- Remove the valve cover and camshafts
- Take out the accessory belt and all the pulleys
- Remove the cylinder head
- Drain all the oil and remove the oil pan and since you are here, you can also take out the oil pump intake
- Take out the timing chain cover and remove the chain
- Remove the oil pump
- Take out the crankshaft bearings. Watch out for the crankshaft as now it may come out with all the pistons
- Now unscrew every nut holding the rods attached and remove the four bottom end bearing caps. Again, do it carefully as the crankshaft might fall off with all the rods and pistons above
- Take out the crankshaft
- As a bonus you can also take out the pistons and rods.
