How to Remove Camshafts on Toyota VVTi Engine

Normally, you don’t have to maintenance the camshafts or valves in a Toyota VVTi engine's lifetime, as they are built to last for a long period. However, if something goes wrong and you need to do it, here’s a tutorial on how to remove the camshafts.
The operation is pretty complex and you will need a garage, a complete set of tools, a jack and some gloves if you don’t want to get dirty. Here are the steps:
  • Open the hood and remove the engine plastic cover
  • Disconnect the battery and the electrical connections from the ignition coils
  • Remove the ignition coils and sparkplugs
  • Remove the electric wires' harness
  • Take out the camshafts cover
  • Remove the accessory belt and all the pulleys, including the water pump
  • Take out the timing chain cover and remove the chain
  • Now you are ready to remove the actual camshafts
  • Start removing the camshafts’ bearings from the outer regions first. Gradually unscrew their bolts starting from the outermost ones towards the center
  • Take a closer look at the bearings inscriptions so you can mount them back in the right order.
