How to Remove Valve Cover on Toyota VVTi Engine

If you need to perform some maintenance work on the camshafts on your Toyota VVTi engine, you’ll need to remove the valve cover first.
It’s a medium skill-level job you can perform in your garage using some basic tools, like screwdrivers and a set of ratchet sockets. Here are some tips on how to perform the job:
  • Leave the engine cool off if you used the vehicle
  • Disconnect the battery
  • Remove the two screws holding the engine plastic cover
  • Lift and take out the plastic cover
  • Disconnect the ignition coils’ electric connections
  • Remove the coils and spark plugs
  • Remove the electric harnesses
  • Locate and remove all the bolts holding the valve cover
  • Use a thin screwdriver to pry and remove the valve cover if its stuck.
