The current generation of the Honda Civic was launched last year to some woefully bad reviews. The company is already addressing the issues, but also thinking ahead at the next generation which will arrive as early as 2016, only five years into the current model’s life cycle.
According to USA Today, Honda is also considering a 5-door hatchback version of the car specifically for the US market, after Hyundai also introduced a five-door version of the Elantra. Of course, the Elantra 5-door is actually the European i30, but the Civic hatch won’t be allowed to pull the same trick.
Instead of offering the funky European version of the Civic, the next generation model for the US will be developed exclusively in North America. The decision was made by global top management last month, Erik Berkman, president of Honda R&D Americas said at the Center for Automotive Research Management Briefing Seminars in Traverse City, Michigan.
We’d urge them to reconsider and offer the European Civic as a test to see what consumers really want.
