With gas prices going up and down pretty awkwardly in the last couple of years, mobile applications specifically developed to help users find the cheapest options have become incredibly popular.
Sygic's Fuelio, for example, recorded a 75 percent increase in the number of daily users in early 2022 (you know, that awful moment when gas prices absolutely skyrocketed for a reason that we're not going to discuss today). Furthermore, the year-over-year downloads increased by six times versus 2021 for the same reason.

It's pretty clear the demand for such apps not only exists but also increases, especially as drivers are always looking for the most affordable fill-up.

Crowdsourcing appears to work like a charm for this purpose. For instance, Waze comes with a gas price component, allowing users to submit the current prices for each type of fuel. However, Waze's primary objective is navigation, so finding the cheapest gas isn't necessarily straightforward.

Fuelio, on the other hand, is specifically focused on this thing. Using crowdsourced fuel prices, Fuelio can help drivers compare prices, filter by stations, see the distance to each location, and estimate their costs right from their Android devices.

Because the need for more advanced tools has become pretty obvious, Sygic is now coming up with Fuelio Pro, a subscription-based upgraded version that includes a very intriguing pack of tools.

The all-new Route Planning Tool combines two very advanced components Sygic owns: the fuel station database and its navigation engine.

Thanks to this new tool, users can configure their routes and see every gas station on the way, along with various price details. For example, the application displays not only the latest prices but also the average prices per country. Drivers can filter the listings based on multiple criteria, including brands.

The route planning system is incredibly advanced, and in some ways, it reminds me of A Better Routeplanner. The EV route planning app, which Rivian has just acquired, allows electric vehicle owners to plan long journeys with charging stops included. In other words, the app helps address range anxiety, making it easier to complete a long trip based on information about the vehicle. ABRP can estimate your range based on vehicle details and then automatically suggest charging stops with compatible plugs and so on.

The new Fuelio Pro works in a similar fashion. The application allows drivers to configure vehicle details, including the range, and then look for proper routes to the destination using this information. You'll get suggested fill-up stops, with the planned routes then updated automatically to include accurate distance and ETA data.

More importantly, Fuelio can also generate reports that include final trip expenses, so you'll know precisely how much you'll spend on fuel based on accurate estimates (again using crowdsourced data). The reports include calculated route details, such as the distance and d the ETA, expense data with fuel price and consumption, as well as totals to let you know much fuel you'll burn and its associated cost.

Given Sygic's know-how in the navigation world, the application also includes advanced route options. You can enable and disable highways and configure routes specifically to save gas. The changes are applied in real-time, so you'll see your estimated expenses getting updated on the spot.

Overall, Fuelio evolves substantially with this Pro version, making route planning significantly easier, even in the case of a gas or diesel vehicle. Sure enough, not everybody might be willing to pay about 9 Euros (that's close to $10) for such capabilities, but it is worth knowing that the free version of the application won't change with the addition of this subscription-based model. In other words, the features that are available today will continue to be offered at no cost, so if you enjoyed Fuelio before, you should continue to enjoy it in the future too.

If you want to try out the application without paying, Fuelio comes with a three-day trial for Android users. This means you can install the application and get access to the entire feature lineup without paying for a subscription for a maximum of three days. You must pay to continue using the app when the testing period expires.

For the time being, Fuelio Pro is only available on Android, so you're out of luck if you use an iPhone. Sygic has so far remained tight-lipped on its plans for an iPhone version of the app.

On the other, the app stores also provide access to various other alternatives, maybe not as advanced as Fuelio Pro, but still worth checking out. Waze is a decent replacement if you want to stay up-to-date about nearby gas station prices, especially thanks to its gigantic user base. Wazers typically provide fresh information on traffic conditions and gas prices, so if you use Google's navigation app, the gas prices are likely fully accurate.
