We remember a time when the Fiesta Zetec was the only Ford you needed. Heck, it even had an added body kit for a few years, but the trim level is dead in Britain, which is the Fiesta's biggest market.
In its place, Ford has introduced the equipment-oriented Fiesta Trend, which is a name that just screams "base model." It also bumps the 2020MY prices by about £500 to £15,995, though we're sure the company will boast that you're getting a better deal.
The Fiesta Trend is available with both the 3- and 5-door models, tinted rear glass, projector headlights, 16-inch alloys, and metallic paint, all of which would have been optional before. But you're not getting a lot of engine for the money, only a 1.1-liter Ti-VCT unit (naturally aspirated) pumping out 85 horsepower and ready to return 48.7mpg UK (5.8 l/100km). With 110 Nm of torque pushing through a 5-speed gearbox, this hatch takes a leisurely 14 seconds to reach 62 mph (100 km/h).
Yes, that is the only engine you can have. Taking into account that you'll pay another £500 for the 5-door body which most manufacturers now have as standard, we'd walk straight to a Renault or Volkwagen dealership instead. Alternatively, you could spend about £19,000 on a Fiesta Titanium with either the 1.5 diesel or the EcoBoost 1-liter.
Even so, Ford believes that about a quarter of the 100,000 Fiestas it will sell per year will be of the Trend variety. By keeping options and variations to a minimum, the company can probably offer better deals, especially to small fleet buyers.
The Fiesta Trend also comes with the new SYNC infotainment with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, as well as Ford MyKey, lane keep assist and intelligent speed limiter.
Andy Barratt, Ford of Britain managing director, said: “Our new Fiesta Trend has stand-out appeal thanks to looks and equipment. It has been designed with our value Fiesta shopper in mind and represents the package of styling and ease of use they require.”
