Not to be confused with the German machine gun of the same name from Rheinmetall, the MG 3 is a poor excuse of a subcompact hatchback. And MG for that matter, more so if you bear in mind what sort of cars the British brand was making before the Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation took over control.
As if this background wasn’t enough to lose interest in the MG 3, the company has the audacity to describe the refreshed model as “fabulous” from the title of the press release attached at the end of the story. Fabulous can mean many things depending on context, but whichever way you choose to look at the 3, this MG is anything but that.
Priced at £9,495 on the road, the facelift benefits from seven years or 80,000 miles of warranty, whichever comes first. The warranty is also transferrable to future owners, but then again, depreciation will hit this fellow hard and fast from the very beginning.
The “new MG 3 is another example of how we’re creating fantastic value-for-money packages across the range. Our seven-year warranty, high specification, competitive pricing, strong finance offers, and fantastic design really set new MG 3 apart in the supermini segment,” said Daniel Gregorious, head of sales and marketing.
Hey Daniel, have you heard of a supermini called the Dacia Sandero? What about the Suzuki Swift and Skoda Fabia? There’s no other way of saying it, but the MG 3 is nothing but a me-too of the segment. Adding insult to injury, the 3 isn’t made in the United Kingdom, but China and Thailand.
As ever, the MG 3 comes with a 105-horsepower engine that returns 47.1 miles per gallon with 140 grams of CO2 emissions per kilometer. The naturally aspirated mill isn’t sporty at all despite the low weight of the car, but what did you expect at this price point? If you insist, MG says the 3 can accelerate to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 10.5 seconds.
Three trim levels are available in total, ranging from the Explore to the Excite and Exclusive. Two latter two feature an 8.0-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay but no Android Auto.

This new generation easily blasts the old MG3 out of the water and contains such features as:
