At long last, Honda Australia confirms the impending launch of the latest Accord sedan on the local market. However, customers will have little choice but to buy it as a hybrid because it will arrive exclusively in e:HEV form.
Born in 1976, the mid-size sedan is Honda's second longest-running nameplate and one of its best-selling models in markets like the United States since before the 1990s. Last year, for example, it ranked 17th in America with almost 198k units delivered to customers who wanted the latest and greatest – the eleventh generation.
Now, finally, the company is expanding its appeal in more regions, and because it has "become a household name in Australia for almost five decades" (it was launched in 1977), it is also set to arrive in the Land Down Under more than a year after its original launch in November 2022. Better late than never, as they say, and better even with just one powertrain rather than none, seems to be the motto here.
As such, Honda will only sell the latest Accord in e:HEV RS form, combining its subdued design with the efficiency of the company's hybrid setup – the fourth-generation two-motor hybrid system, first introduced on the CR-V e:HEV RS has a 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine, now with direct injection, and two large and powerful electric engines located "side-by-side rather than in-line with the engine crankshaft as in the two-motor hybrid system in previous generations."
In America, the hybrid setup, which doesn't carry the fancy e:HEV designation, offers 204 horsepower in both CR-V and Accord models, so we don't expect any significant changes here, either, even though Honda didn't announce the power ratings and other technical details with the Accord for Australia.
"The Honda Accord has a rich history in the Australian market as a sophisticated, luxurious flagship model which has been a customer favorite since its arrival in 1977", said Honda Australia Director Carolyn McMahon. "This new model offers the premium feel that Accord is renowned for, coupled with all the additional technological advances that customers are becoming accustomed to, including Honda's e:HEV hybrid powertrain that delivers a dynamic combination of performance and efficiency."
Most likely, the Japanese automaker will announce additional details later this year – including the technical specifications, trim levels, and – above all – prices, as the new Honda Accord is scheduled to debut across nationwide Australian dealerships starting from the second quarter of 2024. Meanwhile, over in America, Honda fans are expecting a field year already. The company has revealed the pricing details for the Prelude all-electric crossover SUV, and it is also preparing updates for the Odyssey minivan and – most importantly – a facelift for the eleventh-generation Civic series that will also see the introduction of the Hybrid version for the 2025 model year.
