If you're looking to buy a new SUV this year and blistering fast acceleration is at the top of your checklist, look no further than one of these ridiculously capable performance-oriented models.
Though SUVs have been around for decades before the term became popular, the car-buying public, and, consequently, the automotive industry, became obsessed with these vehicles over the last fifteen years or so.

Speed-addicted car nuts haven't been too fond of SUVs, but some members of this hard-to-please demographic have been won over by several carmakers who unleashed some irresistibly potent and gorgeous SUVs.

So, if you're one of those enthusiasts who remains addicted to speed and performance but appreciates the practicality of an SUV, these are the five quickest models available right now.

Ferrari Purosangue - 3.2 seconds

For decades, Ferrari resisted the SUV push and remained the only established sports car manufacturer that didn't add one to its lineup.

That changed in September 2022 when the beautiful Purosangue was revealed to the public.

Though the Italian carmaker insists on calling it anything but an SUV, the four doors, ground clearance, and all-wheel-drive system make it clear that the new model was developed for the luxury SUV crowd.

Based on a modified version of the Ferrari Roma platform, the Purosangue is powered by a 6.5-liter naturally aspirated V12 unaided by electric drivetrain components.

Rated at 715 hp and 528 lb-ft (716 Nm) of torque, the engine enables the 4,482-pound (2,033 kg) Purosangue to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (97 kph) in 3.2 seconds.

Though not the quickest SUV on the market, the four-door prancing horse is the only one with a naturally aspirated.

Aston Martin DBX707 - 3.1 seconds

Aston Martin, another European carmaker that became legendary for its sporty grand tourers and motorsport endeavors, was also late to the SUV party.

But when it arrived, it did so in style, introducing us to one of the most beautiful SUVs ever made.

In production since 2020, the DBX is based on an advanced chassis developed specifically for the model and, like all current Aston Martins (including the Formula 1 cars), it's powered by potent Mercedes-AMG-sourced engines.

Even in standard trim, the luxury SUV was a top performer, but in 2022, the company introduced an even more performance-oriented trim called DBX707.

Apart from a series of unique aesthetic upgrades, the 707 also received an improved version of the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 that pushed output from the standard 542 hp and 516 lb-ft (700 Nm) of torque to 697 hp and 664 lb-ft (900 Nm).

For 2024, the DBX707 didn't receive any drastic upgrades, so the DBX707's output hasn't changed.

But that's by no means a bad thing, considering that the gorgeous SUV can accelerate to 60 mph (97 kph) from a standstill in 3.1 seconds.

Rivian R1S - 3.1 seconds

Launched during the 2022 model year, the Rvivian R1S and its pickup truck sibling, the R1T, were the culmination of an ambitious project that spanned over a decade.

The only SUV on this list with true off-road capabilities, the R1S is also extremely potent on asphalt, thanks to its powerful Bosch electric motors.

When equipped with four of them, the 2024 R1S has no less than 835 hp and 908 lb-ft (1,231 N⋅m) of torque on tap. That means it can sprint from 0 to 60 mph (97 kph) in 3.1 seconds.

But while ridiculously quick, this is not an SUV that prioritizes performance but rather a mix of power, practicality, convenience, and versatility.

So, while it's not the quickest SUV on this list, the Rivian R1S is definitely the most versatile, and it's the perfect choice for speed addicts who also enjoy an off-grid adventure.

Lamborghini Urus Performante - 3.0 seconds

Though Lamborghini is renowned for its sports cars, the manufacturer went off-road in 1986 with its LM002.

For the modern SUV era, the company's contender became the Urus. Unveiled in concept form back in 2012, the four-door Lambo went into production five years later.

Though some argue it's more Audi/VW than Lamborghini, the Urus is currently one of the most popular luxury SUVs out there.

This year, it's also one of the quickest, particularly in Performante guise.

When equipped with this trim, the SUV gets extensive exterior upgrades meant to improve downforce and reduce weight.

Even though the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 doesn't get a performance boost to its standard 657-hp rating, its aero upgrades help the Urus Performante reach 60 mph (97 kph) from a standstill in 3.0 seconds, making it the quickest ICE-powered SUV on the market.

Tesla Model X Plaid - 2.5 seconds

Though EVs roamed the streets about a century before the company was born, Tesla helped revive and revolutionize them.

In a little over a decade after it was founded, Tesla became the premier EV manufacturer and kicked off an industry-wide switch to electric power.

Its first foray into the SUV segment came in 2015 when the Model X was launched.

In the years that followed, the X was continually improved, becoming one of the most popular upscale SUVs on the planet.

For 2024, it remains one of the quirkiest, most technologically advanced, gadget-like vehicles available. Moreover, the high-performance Plaid version is still the undisputed SUV champion in terms of straight-line capabilities.

According to Tesla, the trio of electric motors, which deliver 1,020 hp and 752 lb-ft (1,019 Nm) of torque, are capable of launching the Model X Plaid from 0 to 60 mph (97 kph) in 2.5 seconds.

Although it's not as luxurious as some entries on this list, the X Plaid is noticeably quicker and, best of all, cheaper.
