After launching the refreshed G80 in its home country, luxury carmaker Genesis is preparing an update to the Electrified G80, the fully electric variant of the executive sedan. The Electrified G80 only started sales in the US last year, but it's already heading for a redesign. Our photographers caught it in the long-wheelbase variant as Genesis tries to energize sales.
Hyundai spun off the Genesis brand as its luxury division in 2016 and expanded its model lineup to include gas-powered and electric vehicles. Although praised for its build quality and brand image, Genesis wasn't as popular in the US as Hyundai wanted it. Although the E-GMP-based GV60 has many qualities, many perceived it as a more expensive, awkward variant of the Hyundai Ioniq 5. The G80 executive sedan looks set to displace other luxury carmakers from the market. Still, its US sales have been lackluster at best, at less than 4,200 units in 2023.

These include the full electric variant, which Gensis called "Electrified G80." Only 1,329 units were sold in 2023 when this model started sales in the US. To be fair, the electric G80 hasn't been more successful in its home market, Korea, where it also lingers around 1,000 units per year. The Electrified G80 was launched in 2021 at the Shanghai Auto Show and is already on its way to being replaced for the 2025 model year, following a minor redesign of the ICE G80 in December. The facelifted model is now undergoing last-minute testing, allowing our photographers to snap the long-wheelbase variant heavily disguised.

The camo covering the lower part of the car suggests that Genesis will offer more distinctive features to the electric variant of the G80. Considering that the combustion-engine G80 unveiled in December in Korea sports only minor modifications, what Genesis hides this time is intriguing. As part of the update, we expect redesigned headlights and taillights, including a new light signature. The Electrified G80 will also get new bumpers and grille similar to the facelifted gas model.

Likewise, the interior changes will also make their way into the EV variant. These include the 27-inch OLED screen that replaces the two previous LCD screens. The Electrified G80 will also get the touch-based HVAC system, a redesigned gear shifter with a crystal-like appearance, and revised trim. If you're looking for a more exotic alternative to the BMW i5, the Genesis Electrified G80 will not disappoint.

The current model sports a 365-horsepower electric drivetrain powered by an 87.2 kWh battery. Genesis will likely want to up that, as rumors indicate a bigger-capacity battery pack will be offered on the facelifted model. This could expand the EPA estimated range from the current 282 miles (454 km) to at least 310 miles (500 km). The bigger battery goes well with a longer wheelbase, and you notice the larger rear doors that suggest this is an LWB variant.
