The Tesla Cybertruck will be one of the highlights of this year's Petersen Gala Live Auction. The highest bidder will be among the first to own the controversial pickup truck, although this will not be the coveted VIN 001. Even so, people expect the Cybertruck to attract huge bids, with some predicting it will sell for close to $1 million.
It is not uncommon in the automotive industry for the most anticipated car models to start their career at a charity auction. We've seen iconic models such as the Chevy Corvette, Cadillac Escalade V, GMC Hummer EV, and Ford Mustang, auctioned off at various charity events. These were all "VIN 001" models, making them sought-after collectibles. This partly justifies the vast amounts paid for them, with the rest being the uplifting feeling of helping a good cause.

As you can see, the Detroit Three is very fond of these events. Now, Tesla wants a piece of the auction (pun intended) for its Cybertruck electric pickup. Tesla teamed up with the Petersen Automotive Museum to auction off one of the early units of the Cybertruck during their 29th Petersen Gala on October 7.

According to the invitations sent out, this will not be the VIN 001 but a "low-VIN 2024 Tesla Cybertruck." Even so, the highest bidder in the Petersen Gala Live Auction will become one of the first to own a Tesla Cybertruck, which is no small feat. People expect the outlandish pickup to attract sky-high bids for this reason alone. The bonus is that the winner will also help Petersen Museum raise funds for their activities.

Tesla has had a long relationship with the Petersen Museum, and the original Cybertruck prototype has proven a very popular exhibit. It makes sense that Tesla again partnered with the Petersen Museum to promote the soon-to-be-launched electric pickup. If I were Elon Musk, I would probably bid out everyone at the gala. One week later, after the buzz subsided, I would donate the truck to the museum for a double-tap effect.

The Petersen Gala invitations might offer another hint that the Cybertruck deliveries are imminent. Although it's unclear whether the winner will take delivery of this Cybertruck before the official delivery event, during, or later, it's safe to assume that Cybertruck production will start soon. Usually, the model year change at Tesla happens in October, which means that the 2024 Cybertruck will roll off the production line at Giga Texas in a jiffy.

If you're planning to bid for the chance to win this Cybertruck, you better buy tickets soon. A seat at the event costs $1,750, although you might want an entire table ($17,500) to have your buddies with you when you make history. If you feel generous, you better pay $30,000 for a Premier Table. The event will be hosted by Jay Leno, one of the first people outside Tesla who got to see and drive one of the early Cybertruck prototypes.
